We were in one of our closest cities today, Stettler, drove past a KFC store posted outside so all traffic could see,Help Wanted, starting wage$11.00. Stopped at a A&W{not sure if this is Canadian...a hamburger, fast food place}posted inside,Help wanted...part time wage $12.00-Full time $14.00 Starting . We have an Oil boom going on in Alberta right now,NOBODY can get workers, the oil patch pays sickening amounts of money.Seriously Albertas going crazy!!!

Last week our government decieded to bring in people from other countries to start filling these positions, this in itself is not a good thing. We have alot of people from our own country abusing our welfare system that should be MADE to go out and work...with these kind of wages for working in fast food places, how can they not do it. I' hope to gosh our government isn't paying welfare recipents $14.00 an hour for sitting at home.

We have lots of Easterners coming to Alta. to work, they're a good hard working group of people. Our daughters BF is from Cape Breton. NS.a real good kid, theres little work in some of those Eastern provinces,so we're glad to have them. Towns around Calgary,Cockrane,Canmore, Airdrie,Strathmore, to name a few.

You know I never came here for work. Really we came here before the boom.
Preston Manning and Ralph Klein sparked my interest. The liberals were driving me crazy back east and I wanted to live someplace where there wernt any.
Will James,Wilf Carter and Ian Tyson contributed to my idea of coming to Alberta  . The big attraction was the land itself. Perfect horse country. Still lots of remote areas and huge numbers of big game.
Here is the thing though. All of this economic success is destroying what made Alberta so great in the first place. Just last night I met a truck when I was out riding asking if he could access the forestry from where he was. I informed him he was on private land. This guy was from Saskatchewan.
4 days before that there was two guys in a truck back here doing the same thing. They were from Medicine Hat.
Like if I take a horse out I have to stay away from the gravel roads because everytime I get close to one there is always some tourist wanting to take my picture.
I live 45 minutes from town on gravel roads. If I drive to town I bet I will meet anywhere from 4 to a dozen trucks one way! Plus these acreages are getting closer and closer to where I live :x .
In the summer there are all these hickers everywhere and in the fall its all these hunters trampling around everywhere. These people are not from around here. Its getting awful. Then you got friggen airplanes flying overhead :x
But I can sure see a big difference between now and ten years ago and it isnt for the better. Where overstocked with people and its ruining the province.

Just got back from taking a colt out. Met a truck back there with Idaho plates on it. This is on private land too
BTW When I complain about truck traffic im talking about regular small passenger pickups.
You know Miss Greg I dont think its all about oil. Oil is only 30% of our economy. If oil drops to $10 a barrel tommorow its not going to kill the economy.
Oil was at $13 here not so long ago which shut down the oil patch but the economy was still strong and people were still moving here.

I think your right in some ways Roper, but what are you crediting the boom too?Oil and gas mostlyin my opinion. Where we live in Central Alta. we haven't seen activity like this in 10 years. Now darn near everyone in our areas getting a well. And Ft. Mcmoney is REALLY booming. Homes in our area that have sat for YEARS are being bought up by people working in Ft. Mac and commuting. Ita a ripple effect, more workers, more homes, more business, more workers.......more money

Got to say im surprised that anybody in Virginia has ever heard tell of Ian Tyson.
Glad your going. Think you will really enjoy it :)
He must be doing a lot of shows this year? He is doing one over east of here and then he is doing another one over in Longview this summer at the hall.
I really like his music, especially his older stuff

You know Roper I kind of forgot your from the East because you are such a positive advocate for Alta. I soooo agree with you about the amount of people coming into our province, the OVERCROWDING of everything...the housing and land prices. I do NOT think this boom is ALL positive to say the least :? :?

Freedom and Liberty
The Alberta advantage
Corporations from all over North America are relocating to Alberta. The Bay Street Boys and Vancouver are fast becoming second and third fiddle to Cow Town.
Lowest taxes in North America. We dont have bull$hit laws like everywhere else. Were as pro business as you can get. Lots of businesses starting up everywhere. Nobody wants the friggen government to tell them how they should run there business.
When Ralph Klein basically told the Feds that they can go F themselves with the Federal gun registry thats what did it for me. Thats when I moved here.
Like Miss Greg you have no idea how over regulated the rest of the country is. You have no idea how many bull$hit laws they have against everything. Its awful!
We came to Alberta to be left alone.
When I was living in NS I was paying out half of my paycheck in taxes. Then I was taxed again on every dollar I spent 18% I think if I remember right. You see we had an 11% provincial sales tax with the GST on top of it. Plus high gas taxes, plus everything was illegal back there.
You have no idea how hard it was to try to run anykind of a small business back there. The government was your worst enemy.
Anyway down south here there is way more going on than oil and natural gas. Actually im starting to think of the oil and gas guys as sons of bit@hes. There trying to come into our area right now and if they get in here they will ruin it. The last thing we need in here is roads!

I have been all over North America and its because of this that I love Alberta so much. A lot of people who have lived here all their lives tend to kind of take Alberta for granted.
Anything is possible in Alberta. It truly is the land of milk and honey where dreams can come true.
I dont know how to say it but its hard not to be posative when you live in Alberta because anything is possible here. Opportunities everywhere!
LOLs Im going to shut up though because I dont want to cause more people to come here

Ian and Sylvia were one of my favorite groups in the late '60s and I jumped at the chance to hear him live. Here's one of my favorite albums of all time:

I have actually never heard any of his stuff when he was with Sylvia. What are the songs about? You see when he was with Sylvia he was living in Ontario. Im kind of thinking its not about cow country?

Roper As you probably have guessed people born and raised in Alta. REALLY have no idea about whats really going on outside of our province,Alberta Arrogance I guess you could call it.We kind of have the same attitude Texas does...Is there anywhere else on earth? greg and I are learning more listening to our daughters BF stories about Cape Breton...loves his home but cannot afford to live a decent life there. The jobs are seasonal,no money to even try to get out of parents home....Like you Roper this young man loves Alta. and hopes to make a permanant home here.

Reader,I remember watching a T.V show with Ian and Sylvia,Canadian CTV probably. It was REALLY folky music, not really my style at the time...I'm a classic rock fan. I always was surprized Ian went sooo cowboy country after they split up. Greg loves Ian...hes going to see him next weekend in Innisvail..Ivan Daines ranch...I'm passing, not a real huge fan of the man in person..do like his cowboy music though

Someday Soon Reader is my no.One favorite Ian Tyson song! The 'Four Strong Winds" Ian sang at a memorial for four fallen R.C.M.P officers last year..still gets to me .

It's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there-I did for awhile come to think of it back in the day lol. If you want to make an Albertan mad compare their province to a poorly run Indian reserve-nobody pays taxes and you've got a drunk for a chief lol. Believe me it works at least it did in the brand shack in Brooks after a bull sale and a few whiskeys. Ian Tyson is a great song writer but Corb Lund can pen a pretty good lyric too.

Ok,I get the part about our chief being a drunk, but you lost me on the nobody pays taxes part?If nobody else in our province is paying taxes I want to know about it cause we missed that exemption :? . Yes,personally I pick Corb over Ian anyday, but thats just me. He shows up at his concerts and once there puts on one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Sales tax lol. There are people in Sask. will drive 100 miles over to Alberta to save $4 sales tax on toilet paper-I had to settle down some Alberta guys that night -I was getting ripped about being from the 'have-not' province all night long.

Mrs Greg in 2002 Stockwell days flat tax for Albertans took effect. The first $12,000 of personal income is exempt from tax and then you only pay 11% on whatever you make above this.
Compared to the rest of the country we pay no taxes. We dont even have a provincial sales tax.
Most of the taxes your paying are Federal although im sure the New Harper conservative government will change that.
