I messed up and put about a half a quart of SAE 30 motor oil in my F150. Don't know what I was thinking. I was just topping it off before a 200 mile trip I'm taking tomorrow. Of course, I run 5W-30 in it as called for by the manufacturer. So, can some of you knowers-of-engines tell me if this is a major deal? If it weren't for this trip I'd just change the oil and not even drive it. But since I have this trip I have to take, I'm wondering if it's really that big of a deal? Appreciate any knowledgable assistance. I could get a different vehicle for the trip if I really need to.

Shoot, It's a Ford! You'll be doing yourself a favor if it seizes up! Then ya can get ya a real truck! :D :D :D :D I think half a quart shouldn't hurt ya, but i'm a half a quart low myself!

okay that was burst out laughing funny 'H

HP, hubby says it should be okay...why don't you just change it if you're not leaving until tomorrow morning?

Leaving at 6:00 am and don't have oil or filters. Otherwise, good plan. So two votes for just going ahead and driving it. But one of those votes is from a guy that digs around in the rocks all day.

Should be just fine....The only time I've heard of a possiblity of a problem was when mixing real motor oil with synthetic- as some have told me they don't blend together well....
30 weight is just perfect for this time of year...

Okay, so Old Timer has the last word? Nobody is going to disagree, right? If you're reading this and thinking "Man, I woudn't do that, but go ahead and ruin your pickup if you want to", then you better get to typing right now :!: Otherwise I'll be picking some fights for no apparent reason here on Ranchers.net if that darn thing seizes up tomorrow. Think "Copenhagen in the Eye"; that's how bad things are going to get around here if things turn out badly. I'd feel real good if that rock-crusher from the northeast were chiming in on this one. Not that I don't trust Yanuck's hubby, Leanin' H and that crazy OT... Ha! Thanks to the three of you!!

The rock crusher from the north east? Soapweed?

I haven't seen too many rocks in Soapweed's photos, that's for sure!! Nah, I can't think of the gentleman's "name" right at the moment. Seems like he owned a bunch of heavy equipment and had a company that did road work and that type of thing. Wasn't he in Minnesota, Indiana or Illinois? Real knowledgeable about all things mechanical, if memory serves. Of course, I can't even remember to look at a label on a can of motor oil, so don't bet on my memory.

Good chatting with all of you. You folks always crack me up!!

George :D

Can't imagine that only half a quart of 30W will be a problem, especially in the summer. Better for it to have that than to be run low. I'm no engine expert, but speaking from experience concerning windmill gearbox lubrication, guys who insist on using heavy weight oil, like 90W gear grease, rather than windmill oil, which is lighter than 10W, cause far less damage than those who let 'em run dry.

It's built Ford tough--drive it like you stole it

Like most say - no problem.

When I worked for BFOC (Big Fat Oil Company) we had a lube oil plant that made oils via the batch process. They hired a new guy and told him how to fill drums going out. After a couple of hours, he came into the office and said he had run out of 10W30 oil. It turned out that he had put 10W30 in all the drums marked 10W, 20W, 30W, etc. and that these drums were already mixed up with others.

They couldn't figure out anyway of finding those filled incorrectly. Finally, they decided to not say anything. They never got a complaint from a single customer, even one mentioning that the pour point of the oil was add.

Using 30W instead of a multiweight probably won't hurt a thing except when it gets down to about 30 degrees below zero and the engine won't start. If it won't start, it won't hurt anything except your temperament.

I believe, one of the specifications of most oils today is that they are to be compatable with each other. I wouldn't recomend or make a practice of mixing oil of different vicosity though. I don't think it would hurt in an emergency though. Mixing SAE10 and SAE 30 won't make SAE 20. I think mixed grades of oil would still provide adiquit lubercation.

If it was me I'd forget about it and drive it.

If the added oil was gear lube, hydraulic oil, or ATF or something else mistakenly added then that might be cause for concern.

BMR, Soapweed has finished his rock crushing job. It's all sand now!  8) :!:

You know every little noise he hears from the engine today is going to be huge!!

Hearing ANY noise from a Ford is a pleasant suprise!  That's why it's a Fix Or Repair Daily!

well H, i see that you are not a ford fan. so, what is your pickup of choice?
