This is the little excavator we bought last fall. Alternator quit working and I have about exausted trying to get it out the easy way. Will phone the place we got it from but it looks like there are three procedures.

1. Pull the oil cooler and the rad out.

2. Pull motor mounts and hope there is enough room then.

3. Drill and sawzall to the cab behind operators seat and build door.

Alternator is on the far side of the engine about 4 inches from the cab.

I understand some models the engine and hydraulic pump will slide out for easier access but I don't see how or if this one will.

I can read Japanese, that says, " SASKATCHEWAN RESIDENTS, KEEP FINGERS OUT OF FANBELT"

:P :P :P :P :P

Well if you've found the fanbelt you are just a step away from the alt  ............don't ya just love it when a failed part is the one they built an entire machine around! Design engineers should be forced to spend their apprenticeship out in the field doing repair work before they're ever allowed to start drafting designs!

I have the compressor for the AC removed and was going to take the bracket that it bolts to until I figured out the bracket is also part of the top coolant port. (second pic)

I have tension slide bolt out and am building strenth to get bottom bolt out tommorow. :D The aluminum threads from the alternator are coming with the bolts.

It would be so easy if there was a plate I could remove from the back of the cab. There may be one yet.

Gcreek, I am having a herd enough time with a fan belt on a skid steer and it looks like I have about twice the room you do.

Good Luck!

I might be tempted to phone a Komatsu mechanic for their advise.

Make sure you block your number first, so they can't bill you...

Gcreek - you can't even use the muscle approach in those tight quarters. Is there access from underneath (if the machine is rotated 180)?

They are open today, if they don't have a miracle cure I am going in the fabricating business.
RSL, you are right about room. The fine thread bolt on the tension slide came out with the aluminum threads on it with a three inch swing on the ratchet. I'm not sure if I can get enough swing to click the ratchet on the bottom bolt, no room for a longer handle than ten inches or so and I haven't broke it loose yet with the finger purchase I can get on the handle.
I have no doubt it will come out of there, I just haven't b!+ched about it enough yet. :D

HEY! We recognize that machine!!

I'm sorry for your plight, gcreek. But, gee, this thread was fun to read! :D

BTW, my dad was a heavy equipment operator all his life. When the
contractors started running some Komatsu instead of all Catapiller;
he said you had to bow to the Komatsu to get it to work.
Maybe you could try that..............

never ran one, never been in one, never worked on one....sorry, can't help. :(

BTW, how long does it take you to feed cows with that thing? and do you even fit it :? i'm having a visual of you in it and it resembles a full grown man riding a kids tricycle

How many clowns in a Volkswagen? :D :D :D

Let us know how it goes Gc if you cannot get answers I may know someone that can help. He is the main mechanic for Kasha farm supplies in Eckville, AB. This guy has worked on everything and is really good. If you need it I will get his name and number for you.

Jobs like that have a distinct tendency to drive me around the bend. It took me about 3 hrs. just to change the fans belts on my 1105 Massey last fall. Don't laugh until you've done it yourself.

Now, to get that same tractor in even more useful condition, I only need to pull the seat out, tear the top cover plate off the tranny, reach down into the cavity I uncovered and flip a mis-positioned control lever back into place to get my 3 pt. hitch working again.

Or I might just take it to the dealer and let him do the 6-8 hrs. labour. I know it will take me at least 20 hours and probably more patience than I possess.

The boys at 4H last night started to tear into changing the head gasket on a 8640 JD. 4 boys 2 hours and they made it down to the tappet cover. These are not mechanic friendly tractors. Send that unit out, these 4H boys would love to tackle the thing gcreek. They are not above making that cab inspection plate though.
