Army worms......

Funny you should mention army worms.

My neighbor just called me (I'm in the city right now) asking if he could use my 'cannon' to spray for worms in his bermuda. Not sure if they're the same as army worms, what we've had here before are called variador. They're about an inch and a half long, and dark green with lighter strips.

Anyway, if he's got 'em again, I've likely got 'em again......and you're likely to get 'em as well.

It funny the white cow birds seem to keep them in check up here this year. I was driving to Crockett Texas yesterday and seen a pasture covered with those birds and the owner said he is controlling army worms the all natural way.

Neighbors are sprayin as fast as they can. So far so good we don't have em yet.....but have the spray rig ready and waitin if we do.

What are they spraying with? Liquid Seven, maybe? They haven't hit my field yet but I hear they can stip a Bermuda grass field in just a few days.

Sevin is the cheapest of pesticides for army worms but is also the most ineffective. It didn't work at all the last time I used it.

Lannate seems to do a much better job.

Have seen a lush Bermuda field stripped in just one night. (That's when they seem to do most damage.)

Better start scouting or praying for a rain.

Mike, they claim here that a heavy rain puts a dent in the worm (variador) population. I don't know if that's true or not.

I forget the insecticide we use, I'll have to take a close-up photo of the bottle and post it.

I do know they can do a lot of damage in bermuda in a very short time.

Checked the field today and saw no evidence of them. Went ahead and cut. Hope to bale Friday .

Our last infestation was in 2001, they move across a field stripping all grass, they do leave behind the legumes in my experience. Years back in the Northern part of the state it was so bad that people skidded off the road when the worms would go from one field across a road to another. That summer we had them I was working at a large dairy farm in Central Maine, there was worm guts build up on the fenders of the tractor when they were harvesting barley silage.

Lannate will kill em before you can make the next pass. Very few people around me use seven anymore. If you get a rain in 24 hours of uesing seven you will have to spray again. Lannate will kill them right now and be done.

We sprayed sorghum yesterday with Lannate. Hope it did the trick.

I have had them really bad this year in my Jiggs fields. Sevin killed a few of them, but we resprayed with Lannate to get the rest. I really do think the Lannate is better and a bit cheaper to use.
