Bottle Calves

Soapweed I have one that will match yours the most fun thing on the place however we don't see him turning out to be a profit more a pet!

Oh and let me start the bidding!

If it was left up to me, I'd meet you in town and give you the calf and a bag of milk replacer. Unfortunately I got outvoted. The other members of the family think the calf is so "cute". At the moment it is laying by the sink in the mud room, just like a pet dog.

Soapweed, was that lil calf a twin? mama wouldn't take it?

No, it was just premature. The mother is a big old girl with a big udder. We'll probably try to graft another calf on her in a couple days. Hopefully by then, she'll have forgotten the smell of this calf.

Soap- I know what that outvoted is....I picked up an orphan (cows bag went bad) yesterday and brought in and fed- suggested hauling it to the sale Thursday...No way--Grandma and grandkids think it would be fun to raise on the bottle....

But I noticed who the dummy was out there this morning at 6AM feeding it

Im usually the one that "feels sorry for it" and brings it in. I get those looks.....we all know the one's. But I still can't NOT feed one that is a baby and mama wouldnt take it, or what ever reason. I'm the sucker for them babies around here, have had em in my washroom, on the front porch etc....
As for the mama that wouldnt take it.......I have no sympathy. She gets a ride to town. And the calf usually either ends up goin to town too a few months later, or is freezer beef.

Oh you Guys! Yep if it were up to the men around here there would never be a bottle calf, but they sure want one to graft every now and again. Yes, milk replacer is$50 per 50 lbs and it does not pay,but someone has to care for the poor little calves. And if you guys ever had to get up with your own babies at night, calves are awhole lot easier to care for. I had several bottle calves at this time a yr. ago,but now I don't have any . Due mainly to all the twins last yr. and only one set this entire spring calving season and we are all but done. :!: :D :D :D :D

My premie twins are now a month old....weigh 30 and 32 lbs respectively and are barely 23" high @ their shoulders.

Love to hear that you ol' rascals got out voted and ahd to keep the baby calves....I remember some of you razzed me for being soft for having an old 27 yr old pet cow....hmmmmm love it how the tables have turned!!!!
