One day JB you or someone is going to have to tell me the difference between buckaroo or non buckaroo.. Most I could ge toff line was buckaroo was a derivitive of the old Spanish vaquero and California/great basin heritage while the Cowboy was more Texas centered and had some of the eastern cowhunter influence (Both originating from the old spanish traditions).. That and something about brides and more silver and something else.. Wasn't all to satisfying for horse idiot overhere.. ..

well now this will be intresting and longggggggggggggggggggg
if we get an education on buckaroo heritage

BTW
jb
i loved the pics
wish i could have been there
i'd have even went and bought a palm leaf and got all buckarroed out maybe even some cuffs and them little short chaps
LOL
until later
jerry

OOOOPSSSSS
i missed a whole page here
well saddletramp i'm with you and jb
i have woked both ends of this buckaroo/cowboy deal and i like what works the best for the job at hand
but if i had the time and the help i'd still dally on a slick horn with a long twine
even here in texas
they would look at me strange but i would just let it smoke some and go on about my way
jerry

Your welcome in my camp anytime. :D

I live and work in cowboy country but have always leaned toward the buckaroo trappings and way of doing things. I think a good hand should fit in where ever the work needs done. I like the fellers that can sip their coffee in either camp.

I pretty much agree with what you said Saddletramp. As I age, I understand the differences more all the time, and I can see why both methods work. The flatter hat has to help some with the sun beating down, and I sure enjoy a pair of chinks when it gets to be 100 deg. The taller buckaroo boots are normally more comfortable than a lower slung boot, in a stirrup anyway. To carry it further, I think using a slick horn makes a lot of sense when first starting out a young horse. I am no master at running rope on a slick horn, but done properly it can build a lot of confidence in a horse as to what he can pull. It is also easier to pop a dally if you get in a jackpot, and save yourself a wreck. The McCarty used in the Great Basin makes a lot of sense when you are alone and a long ways from home. Then we could get into the horsemanship angle, but that is a whole 'nother topic. Not that I am running down a cowpuncher's ways of doing things, but I do see where the buckaroo ways have some merit. I also enjoy trying to master some of the different loops that you see come out of the Great Basin country. I think the fact that they take so much pride in thier gear and work makes it all kinda unique.

I guess I am a hybred, but you will see more buckaroo influence to my gear than otherwise.
