I'm getting a little windy here but I wanted to share this little story... it is theraputic for me to get this stuff off my chest and talk about it and my wife and kids have been gone for close to a week.

In April, I sold a fella a virgin two year old bull and two yearling bulls with the condition that I deliver them June 20th and take payment on that day. A hand shake and the deal was done. This morning I phoned to make sure they would be around to deliver the bulls and they informed me that they wanted to back out.

I'm not that concerned on the yearlings cause I like to grow them out right and offer them as coming two's anyhow - but I was a little steamed about the two year old. I might get lucky on a late need for a bull, but I can't count on it and I might end up hauling him to town for canner on a dreary current market. I've always thought the best part of ranching is you get to make a living surrounded by farmers/ranchers and that business was done for the most part on a handshake - i think i might have to rethink that.

Been there done that and it really bites. So now everybody pays half up front and second half at delivery. First one to write the check buy's the bull no more saving bulls for anybody.

I let one go to a friend a year ago on the pay me in the fall plan I guess I should have stated which fall. It won't happen again if someone want's a bull here they will need to pay when they pick him out I can deliver him a month or two later. Funny thing is were all in the cow business and all have bill's to pay my friend does'nt bother to pay anyone so I guess I need different friends...The worst part of the deal is my wife said not to do it and of course she right and won't forget to remind me of it..

I never take money up front...cause if they do backout....9 times outta 10 you have to refund the deposit to get them to shut'da hell up, eventhough you are entitled to it as the Seller.

First come, first serve..and forget the cks....get ca$h

That bites, when a man says he'll take a bull most will honour their committment, but a $1000 down payment /bull will add certainty to the deal.the standard up here is 50%or 1000 dollars which ever applies.the word also gets around about unethical buyers.

As a bull buyer, if you won't take my check, I won't buy your bull.

I will take their check cause, like Richard said you don't take there check they won't buy your bull and I feel the same way. But any more I always get a deposit so they have as much to loose as I do. I will hold a check and have done so. I try to work with with people as much as I can,as long as every one knows going in. Usually the one that sticks you is the one that can afford it the most. Ninety-nine percent of the people are as good as you could ask for, but that one bad apple. :cboy:

So, does that ca$h get reported, or just get spent for incidentals? :???:

It gets reported smartazz! Apparently you don't?

By you even asking that, I'm sure you take the ca$h and buy more xD cards for that camera.

That's just pretty egotistical to think you can make buyers go out of their way like that.

Since we've sold and all the other ranches are ' bovine-less'.....GA is the only place right now for this brand of critter.

You want that specific name brand of critter, and some do....this is where ya gotta come to. End of story!!!

It's a matter of geography my friend!!!

We trust everyone. Everyone gets one chance here. We will take your check, cash, or even wait if you ask. But you ruin your one chance, then you come off the mailing list, and that has only happend 1 time in 30 years.

If you are the kind of person that always thinks someone is out to get you, than you are probably the kind of person that is out to get someone else.

That sucks that he backed out, but that will happen in private treaty sales. A sale is never really final until the money is in hand. At least you still have the bulls and you don't have to go and chase either the money or the bulls down.

No KOLA, I don't think we would do business. Besides yours are the wrong color. I try to look for the good in people.

So , I got black cows makes me EVIL    .

Whatever floats your leaky boat baby......

It really does stink that someone backed out, but it was their loss.
Found out someone else bought that bull the next morning, so Hereford 76 won't have to haul him to the canner. :D

It does kinda gripe a fellow when someone backs out of a deal. One thing that probably bothers me even more than that is when someone says they're coming to look at bulls and then don't show up and don't even bother calling to say they're not coming. I hate waisting a day waiting around for someone that don't show up.

A handshake has sorta gone the way of the lease, According what end of the deal you're on !!!!

Well I did get lucky and found a home for the 2 year old - not quite what i had originally sold him for but close. The worst part about it for me was making a bunch of last minute calls asking customers if they were interested in this bull after explaining the situation. It felt kind of embarrassing for some reason - but i could not stand the thought of just dumping at the yards. I just lucked out with a long time old customer that was glad to have him - but then again, he'll need one less next spring.

still going to try and do business on a handshake. to me when you shake a person's hand and look em square in the eye that is usually all I need to feel comfortable. i get the feeling this guy was in a crunch and he didn't know what else to do. i've done business with him before and i would hate to lose his business down the road.
