I'm interested in peoples breeding programs.
How tight of a window is your calving season? When is your calving season and location? What method are you using to synch your cows? At how many breedings do you use a clean-up bull if at all? At what point do you cull a cow out of the herd for not being pregnent?

I have a much smaller operation than what you probably want to hear from but for the record here is my program.

I AI the best cows for pruebreed calves ( Charolis) then turn them in with the rest of the herd ( 32 animals this year) and breed to Angus bulls. I keep a yearling bull with a two year old then sell the two year old nd get another yearling the next breeding season.

I work with two different pruebreed operations and both like to sell two year old bulls to the smaller operations that only need one bull and are reluctant to sell yearling bulls unless they will be working with a buddy.

If anyone needs either registered Angus or registered Charolis bulls PM me and I will put them in contact with the best herds in this area - - -good people to deal with too!

I like to put the bull in around the 15 of January for 120 days. then I calve in the fall, after harvest. this gives me a better use of my grass in the summer, as I get the cows out there and the gain on the bigger calves. plus I think the winter is dryer during oct, nov, dec than it is in the spring here.

rather have cold and frozen ground, than cold wet mud!

We turn the bull out for 42 days, and before we turn the bulls out, we sync all the cows and AI for 7 days. So a total of 49 days. We calve in May and June. We changed to this time of the year so we can calve on dry green grass. Just like the deer do it.
