I don't understand how some can be so indifferent to the struggles of those with such overwhelming commonality, perhaps they haven't thought about things much. I am the harshest critic of Canadians booing the US flag at hockey games, but US cattlemen exploiting Canadian misery is at least as offensive.

The lucky brother can a) leave the injured brother to die thus gaining an extra piece of desert tonight or b) help the injured brother thus conducting his life with virtue and even saving a brother.

As for overall profit in the US cattle industry, I'm neither noble nor ignorant. Beef is too expensive because of inadequate supply. We are seeing sales retarded by high prices. We could move the Canadian beef without moving down the price curve very much. And we would avoid the mistake of building broiler houses and bigger pigger barns. Once these competitive meats structures are built, what is their least loss response to $50 cattle, its production.


One last detail Hat, when questioning my ignorance and suggesting my ideas are dumb, use the correct you're instead of your. I can stand being called ignorant by a literate person.

Sash, of course we're trying just like Canada to ID and isolate any bse. We know there is an extremely small chance of finding another case so seeking is an abundance of caution.
 
I guess the difference I see is that we are actively seeking out downer cows and testing them on the farms. We are even paying farmers to report downers or recently dead cattle so that they can be tested. It just seems to me that if you are only testing what's coming to the slaughter plants and you aren't accepting downer cattle, you are probably not getting a true picture of the prevalence of the disease.
