I was wondering if any of ya have some of your favorite cows named? Or maybe just folks who raise highlands? Between the kids and me the whole dang herd has names. In fact we just culled "bagdrag" today! Short hereford cross with the tendancy to leave teat tracks in shallow snow! But my favorite cow name story comes from my mom. She was a brand inspector about 20 years ago and did lots of work each fall at shipping time. One day she was standing near the scale counting cattle and filling out paperwork and kinda visiting with various ranchers. A real western Utah treasure named Collin Bennion idled up and commenced to tell mom each of his cows names as they came up the alley. They were normal bovine names like "black spot" or "sloped nose" or "coyote stomper" until a large framed high headed cow came tearing up the alley. Collin told my mom that the name of that particular cow was "Barbara Warburton"! Well that was the name of an actual lady who lived in our little town at the time. Mom asked Collin why he named that cow that name. He said,"Because she's a big, good lookin cow, that does damn well what she pleases"!! Mom didnt have the courage to see if Collin had a cow named "Patsy"!

I hate to admit it, but I do have three or four of the cows named. That's not a real high percentage of them, but it's more than I'd like to admit!

There's Peaches and Homeless and Swingbag and Knees. Other than that..............no more have names!!!!

(and yes, swingbag is on the cull list.)

We had an old hereford cow that I just loved. She was freckle-faced and had quite a bit of hair on top of her head; and big, huge ears. But she was the lead cow and she was a good good cow all the way around. When the wind would blow, the hair on top of her head would stand right straight up--and with those big ole ears full of hair she was quite a sight; so we called her "Old Ugly."

When she came up open the fall of 1974, I went to the house and cried over that big old ugly hereford cow.

I think if it hadn't been 1974 and the market had really gone in the tank,
I could have talked Mr. FH into keeping her...but, not to be...had trouble keeping US, let alone a cow that wouldn't bring in any income. But it still was a sad day for me.

For the first 10 years of our marriage wifey and I had 2 sets of records. Hers, with names and mine with tag numbers :? She finally decided that #s could be used as names. It takes a lot less time now to tell each other what cows we've seen on the range that day.
We still have a few that have earned both a number and a name. Ghost, who never turns up until all the trucks are gone but brings a good calf home with her. Dizzy Lizzy, named after a neighbors wife  ,Loo-eeezz, self explanatory and Target, for her white face and spot in the middle of her forehead. :D

The one posted yesterday with baby calf in tow is Darla, named after Lori Darlin'(Diane Lane) from Lonesome Dove. Then there's Claire, named after Claire Allen(Angelica Houston) in Lonesome Dove, Strawberry Alice from Unforgiven, Peach from Lonesome Dove, and Katie, named after Kathrine McClintock, John Wayne's wife in McClintock, played by Catherine O'Hara.

Ok here goes......
Harmony - one of Lil Lilly's
Nubby
Panda Baby (Panda is gone now...she was a swimmer, would leave out the creek...head under the water and walk under the flood gates)
Freckles
Panda Lookin
Mocha 2 dot
Mocha 1 dot
Mocha no dot
Sug Baby (Sug was our very first cow....a hereford)
Big Head
1 eye patch
Ugly
Aunt Jemima
Thelma
Perdy Girl
Lil Orphan Annie
Muffin
Bullwinkle

That's no where near all of em, but that's what's on the cow records that actually have names along with tag numbers. I've quit namin em, well.....at least until they do somethin to get a name :D

We had a rodeo cow named 'Not Madonna' because she was unrideable not like her namesake. We've got lots of good rodeo names. SNAFU, FUBAR, Slanter Banter, Frost bite, Chill Out etc.

I think we've all named a cow or two in our days. But after ladys of the evening...nope :D

Roanie,One eye,Limpy,Blackie,Whitie...you get where I'm goin with this one.....lol

I guess the odd one gets a name that can be printed here... funny how it's only cull cows that I name.
Hobbles----- (she's gonna take that calf if it kills me)
Curly Toes ---- (don't need that getting passed on)
Two T!ts ---- (front quarters hardly exist)
Northern Dancer (man can she run)

Got a few kicking around here with names:

Old 69'er - She came here with tag #69 in her ear. It turned from a number to a name for obvious reasons.

Twinkle Toes - The ugliest cow on the place. I bought her from a neighbor that was planning on turning her into hamburger. As a calf, she'd obviously had her ears, tail and hooves froze. Her toes ever since have curled up, but she's one of the solidest cows on the place. I've kept several animals from her and never saw any bad feet.

Blockhead - The current herd sire. Lotta space between them big ol' eyes.

Towrope - The young bull I just bought. His tail is long enough to pull tractors out of large muckholes.

I'm not really sure why many are embarrassed to admit to naming their cows, myself included. My uncle, who was as cowboy as anyone, ran over 150 head at one point in time, and every last one of them were named. He knew them all and knew when they were born as the names always started with letter code for their birth year.

with kids around you just HAVE to have some with names.... they do most of the naming, Tinkerbell, charcoal, dottie, and receese (like the peanutbutter cup) are a few around here now, but my favorite one was an old cow who had both horns curled around and growing into her head, kid asked me once if it hurt....I said she was trying to commit suicide by growing a horn into her brain.......so she was called the suicide cow, then that got shortened to Sue.

Tow rope hay. Some say a long tail is a milky tail. Are you prepared for some good milking replacement females from that new bull Diamond S?

I like the bull names myself. Last couple of years have been so busy at registration time that I have not put as much thought in to names, but will be back at it next year.

A few of ours from the past -- named after the year letter of course.

Or how about an unusual choice of tatoo herd letters that a young freind of mine chose --- COW ---

Heck our neighbor to the north put the COW brand on his about three feet long.

Yes, ever wonder what a cow named Janet Reno looks like...

I catch all sorts of grief over this cow, and you can probably see why :D She always brings in a good calf, even if she is "cosmetically challenged." She is an excellent marker cow to have on the forest, and she knows when it's time to switch pastures before I do

We have a pile of Charlie Brown characters in our herd. You reminded me of my uncles brand; OUT. His cows were often out, it was his way of extending the grazing season. Didn't like it though when his 300 cows were out in my paddocks but it was up to us to put them IN.
