I was wondering if any of ya have some of your favorite cows named? Or maybe just folks who raise highlands? Between the kids and me the whole dang herd has names. In fact we just culled "bagdrag" today! Short hereford cross with the tendancy to leave teat tracks in shallow snow! But my favorite cow name story comes from my mom. She was a brand inspector about 20 years ago and did lots of work each fall at shipping time. One day she was standing near the scale counting cattle and filling out paperwork and kinda visiting with various ranchers. A real western Utah treasure named Collin Bennion idled up and commenced to tell mom each of his cows names as they came up the alley. They were normal bovine names like "black spot" or "sloped nose" or "coyote stomper" until a large framed high headed cow came tearing up the alley. Collin told my mom that the name of that particular cow was "Barbara Warburton"! Well that was the name of an actual lady who lived in our little town at the time. Mom asked Collin why he named that cow that name. He said,"Because she's a big, good lookin cow, that does damn well what she pleases"!! Mom didnt have the courage to see if Collin had a cow named "Patsy"!
