Oldtimer, you probably know of a couple of these ranches I bet, and one in ranchers territory. Prices are pretty fair huh?

when 780# calves, bring $108 every thing just works better.Feed, seed, and equipment sales all start functioning as intended, cattle men are in a better mood as they feel like they are being paid fair. Now if the weather will hold.........................good luck

Yeah- I know a couple of the places- Browns 620 @ $124.50- they run good cattle, some purebred angus, some with a little simmental influence- do a lot of AI'ing- I bought a composite bull from them a few years ago...I like those $1685 pairs since I'm not buying- makes me feel richer.....Some of the guys had a couple buyers cornered at the waterhole last week and were telling them they were holding out for $1.50 at 575 for Nov delivery...None of the buyers were jerking out any contracts....

Starting to sound like several years ago when wheat was $6.00 bushel and some of the farmers were holding out until it got to $8.00-- I think they ended up selling at $3.00..

Aint it the truth OT, I think that this is your job on here, remind posters of history, the rise and fall, how we do not control at all, we are nothing compared to the whole of the industry. BTW, I am in the BEEF industry, there is no such thing as the COW/CALF industry. I spend 18 months working MAO with my family, it takes 17 minutes for one plant to hang them in a cooler. The US kill is over 120,000 per day. Who are the COW/ CALF producers selling their product to? Just a question to consider, if the feedlots and the packers are the evil ones, why sell to them, it gives them more power and takes away from the profit. WHO DO YOU SELL TO THEN?

Another take on the prices tho came up when I was talking with an old neighbor that sold his place last year and retired--He said he had bought his place in 1955 for $35 an acre..The first year he got a 40 bushel crop and sold it for $2.55 bushel-brought in over $100 an acre- was able to pay off the land and the equipment the first year- back when gas was less than $.25 gallon- said its a good thing because he hailed out the next year...But now that same land is $400+ an acre, fuel is $2.50+ a gallon, fertilizer is out of sight if you can even find it to buy, equipment is 20 times the cost and wheat is still selling for $2.55 bushel..

Same thing has been happening in the cattle industry for the last many years-- we need to get these prices or like rancher says their will be far fewer involved in production.........

Just wondering what the age of the average farmer in Montana is?

I guess it's the same herein Canada. Also wondering what this BSE thing is doing to the Dairy farmers in the US.

Is it a small picture or a bigger one than the one that is being portrayed by the R-calfers?

It's an industry, what you r-calfers forget (OT, haymaker, rancher, etc) forget is that it incompasses more than just your future!

Did you notice Oldtimer just ignored you when you asked him a question. :cowboy:
Not one R-CALFer would get up in the sale barn and announce that they didn't want anyone forward contracting or feeding for a packer to bid on their calves.
Who sells on Superior Auction now for Oct.- Nov delivery . Are they not letting the packers control when their calves move to feed. What does the market do this fall when half the calves are sold in the spring?

With the cattle market being a little tough lately, I'm thinking of diversifying - have a lead on a time-warp machine which is in my price range.
Oldtimer and friends, I've got a heckuva deal for you, introductory special.
I'll send you back to 1955 for a "COOL" (''unmarked'' bills) million.

S.S.A.P., that's a pretty awsome looking ponyon your avatar!

Your comments make a lot of sense, too. But if all those who want to return to the "good old days" really did, consider the unwelcome noise of the wailing when reality set in for them. Have pity on us and discontinue that offer!

I'm just not sure if I'm ready to buy into this globalized world trade order--Giving up much of our manufacturing and agricultural industry to third world countries... I know it will improve their economies and provide the US with cheaper products- and the eastern hunters and conservationists can own all their private hunting and bird watching estates as the US Ag prices drop and they buy up the land- but I'm not sure its the right way to go...

Historically this country was built on strong agricultural and manufacturing industries- Over the last 150 years they have allowed us to survive worldwide depressions, famines and wars- we provided food and manufactured products to save the butts of half the world at times-- I hate to see us now relying on countries that could care less about the US. China is our "buddy" right now as they build their economy- but where will they be 10 years from now when we've given them all our manufacturing base-one coup or takeover and these countries loyalties can flip flop--- and in many areas of the world, the governments in power could care less about buying food- a few more die, its just less they have to feed.... We're dealing with people that don't even think along the same lines as we do and haven't for 100's of years.....

I think we're putting too much reliance on these foreign markets....Should maintain our own industries first- keep them viable and strong- and then import only whats needed above what we can produce domestically....

OT-
We're dealing with people that don't even think along the same lines as we do and haven't for 100's of years.....

God forbide we do business with someone who has a difference of opinion, eh OT?

Murgen- I just don't think we should be sending our industry to countries that still operate sweat shops, have slave labor, are known for killing millions of political oppononents in mass imprisonments and executions...

I definitely have a difference of opion with that and would rather not do business with them.......

So in other words you do not want to sell anything to them either?

How about purchasing oil?

S.S.A.P. - Take it easy on ot, you are confusing him with reality. Y'oughta know better and show some respect for seniors. I would hope that in the future you would challenge his faculties a little less.

That's right, you gotta take it easy on him. He doesn't understand what sort of country he would be living in if not for trade with other countries. Sometimes God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.
Here's a typical protectionist caused screw up for you:
Only US ships can haul goods from one US port to another. Sounds logical to some old folks.... until you find out that there are no US ships that haul cattle. So now try to haul cattle from Hawaii to the lower 48. Suddenly your northern socialist neighbour's port looks pretty inviting, putting Canadian dock workers and trucking companies to work moving these cattle.
See how smart it is to be protectionist?

response...What you and I call a sweat shop they call prosperity. Not everyone can start at the top. All things have to be considered in the context of their reality, not ours.

Come on, Agman, that's pretty condecending, don't you think? How can you tell someone that sweatshops are beneath us, but it's prosperity for you?

I've been sweating in my shop today getting a hay cutter ready for the season. Does that qualify?

It is realtive to their standard of living not ours. I don't condone this but I also don't stand in judgement when the altermnative is considered in these countries.
