We had the brand inspector out yesterday to do a little bunch of cattle-it seems they are switching to charging mileage plus labour which can get a bit spendy for smaller bunches. Well I said when we do bigger groups it should all average out but I guess they are going do those by the head. Lucky the cattle business is so lucrative we can afford some more expense.

Ship a couple of loads without calling them and I bet they will come out for free  .
Actually in all seriousness, we have had very good experience with brand inspection in both AB and SK. It has certainly protected us in a few instances.

Down here the inspectors can charge mileage along with the standard fee.. Most don't if its a short trip- and there are enough cattle to cover gas costs well enough-- but if you have to travel 30 miles to look at 20 head - the $10 fee (20 head @ $.50 head) you get just doesn't hack it.....

How do you B I Laws read

We can Move from Pasture to Pasture in 3 Counties by just Filling-Out and signing a "Trip Ticket" - We can also ship to "Sale Yards" (Auctions) with that Trip Ticket and let them do the Inspection There.

Story:
I made a "Barter" deal with a friend for a Fleshing Holsteins heifer.
A Lady friend was going to raise Calves on her to pay Me for her.
In about a week We broke-up!
Long story but:
Two Sheriff Deputies put me in a Choke Hold up against the Barn While She Loaded the cow.

I had not completed my "Barter Deal" with my friend.
She had not paid me for the cow.

My friend and I Called the Brand Inspector...

Two Deputies, a far off [150 Miles] Sale Barn (Brand Inspector) and she (a Good Looking Red Head)
ALL got hung-out to dry

The Cow Had All Ready Sold
My friend got 3 times the cows worth.

 I just went to the Bathroom and got to Thinking
"I didn't get a "Sales Commission"...

That sounds like normal type Californication to me.... Around here most deputy brand inspectors are also producers- that are chosen/selected/requested by a signed petition of their fellow producers to assist in making sure the right person gets the right cattle- and except for answering to the State Dept of Livestock District Inspector and office on paperwork and audits- have nothing to do with the government.....

And if that animal had your brand on it- and you hadn't signed a bill of sale to transfer ownership- it could not happen unless their was a Court Order dividing conjugal/community property .... If it was unbranded- then you're up the "proverbial creek" without a paddle and almost anyone can claim ownership- and its up to you to prove its not....

I have no problem with brand inspection-I just thought they could do big bunches by the hour to so it would average out.

Sometimes that would be great-- so you didn't have to work and sort off 3-4-5-6 different family brands- or boughten unbranded cattle...Give some incentive for folks to work their cattle ahead of time and not leave it all to the Inspector....
