Just wondering who is using them, what synch program and what you think about them.

We've been using them for the past three years straight with mixed feelings. The first year we used them was great. We put the CIDR in day 0, gave Lutalyse on day 6, then pulled the Cidr on day 7. Got 80% bred, heifers and cows, on the first try, which I was totally amazed with. Worked out great.

Well the next year we used GnRH and PG with the CIDR's. Day 0 GnRH, day 7 Lutalyse and pulled CIDR's. Heat detected, thought we did things right, used GnRH at AI time. we must have got about 55%, it was bad.

Last year I used the CIDR's on cows only, but used the CIDR's in day 0 with GnRH, pull CIDR's on day 7 and Lutaylse. No GnRH at AI time. Got about 65% on that. Used only Lutaylse on heifers and got about 60% on them.

So as I look to how I am going to mess up and waste money this year, just wondering what everyone else was doing? I think this year I am going to go back to the program I used the first year, mainly so incase I have any anestrous heifers. Also, I am going to have to drylot the cattle for about 2 weeks this year, which I haven't had to do before. Have to drylot since I can't get into the circle I had been using for my AI pasture.

Any thoughts?

I used them for 2 years and didnt have very good luck with them, gave the shot of lutalyse also, the first year was 50%,the second year was worse, they was to calve in feb and i was still waiting for them to calve in july,i talked to some people at the college here and they said they have better luck with them on dairy cows,i went back to mga feed and gnrh and lutalsye shot ,all my hefiers are real close now

We have good results with cidrs on heifers but I will not use them again on cow. Too many times through the chute and not good enough success.

I caught nearly 100% of a group of heifers one year when using cidr's and estradiol benzoate on a time breeding program.

The next year I didn't use the ES but did use the cidrs' and only got about 50%.

Mike FYI Estradiol is NOT labeled for use in cattle and rumor has it the FDA is getting ready to come down on those that use it. I work for Trans Ova Genetics and we will not use it all until it is OK'ed by FDA.

I use CIDRS and GnRH at day 0 and pull the CIDR and give Prostaglandin at day 7 to sync my recips and it works pretty well but my numbers dont really correlate directly with AI. When I synch up a group of cows (we dont use heifers) I usually get about 95% of the cows to show a heat, of those that show a heat we typically use 75 - 80 % . For our Dec. 1 through Dec. 31 implants we are running a 70% conception rate on those cows that recieved an egg.

If you assue 95% show a heat and 75% get an egg and you get 70% conception you ultimetly wind up witha 49.87% Pregnacy rate for all CIDR synced cows.

I dont know if that helps or not but for ET work I really CIDR's in our situation.

Use alot of them in different herds and usually have pretty good luck. With any technology from weed spray to vaccines there are some disaster stories but alot of successful ones too. I have the best luck if we don't set up more than a hundred a day. Any more than that and it is hard to get everything done in a timely enough manner. Absolute cleanliness and ACCURATE syringes are as important as anything-I just cringe when I drop in to start A'I'ing and see a shirt incrusted CIDR gun and a 20 year old worn out syringe in the health barn. I won't discuss protocols on here that's for the rancher -his vet and A'I' tech to decide on. They have changed from when we started using them years ago.

We're now using them to sync ET recips. I don't know about you western border states but before they were approved in the US people were sneaking them across the border because they were "the next big thing". In an AI program they pretty well, it's another good tool.

I have never used CIDRs on virgin heifers. My AI rep said early on that it was a little risky and plus it was spendy. He had seen several wrecks with them.

The past three years I have used a heat detection marker, usually I use the Kamar patches and then I have heat detected for a period of about 7 days and then gave a shot of lutalyse to everything that I hadn't bred.

My results have been over a three year period of 97% of my exposed heifers have calved within a 50 day calving period with a high percentage in the first 21 days.

I have used the CIDR's on cows with mixed results. I seem to have good luck with probably over 90% show heat, but my conception rate was down last year quite considerably. I am not sure why, but we did have a really bad storm come through when I was breeding, but I don't know that was it for sure. We will see how this year works as to if I will do it again.

I do know people who use the CIDR's twice on virgin heifers with great results.

I know better than to ask, but can you reuse them the next year, if they were only used once last year. I hear people use them in heifers and then, put them in the cows the same year. I actually had someone want to buy the ones I had in the heifers.
Used CIDR's first time last year, had someone AI for me, I was not impressed with the results.
