Supposedly the one on the left measured 306 gross.

It's a wonder that thorny looking guy could walk through the brush!! That is some wild looking horn.

I think someone is trying to pull the wool over me. They sent me the pic and said that Samson Ridge Camp had opened another game sanctuary here in Alabama.

These deer don't look dark enough for Alabama deer this time of year.

hunting in a pen...sounds like alot of fun  great deer, but pretty disappointing when they are manufactured. those hunters should be so proud

I have no idea what acreage these deer were shot on but there are several "pens" around that are 1,000's of acres.

What's the difference between that and shooting over a food plot or a feeder?

Indeed. I recall a fellow from Mississippi posting a pic of a buck (in velvet) taken in Canada and saying that that was the one he was going after in a month or so. It was a damned nice buck, non-typical. But what were the chances he´d ever be able to locate that same buck?

Sure enough, he shows up one day posing in a photo with the same deer! After quizzing him about the "hunt", I understood how.

I couldn´t hang one like that on my wall.

deer like that are more or less test tube babies. in my opinion, hunting in a high fence area is not hunting. it doesn't matter if its 100 acres or 5000. as far as the difference between using food plots or feeders.....maybe not alot?

no facts, just my opinion :-)

We use dogs. You cant tell me its not hard to shoot a deer running full speed across a field at 250 yds. But we will not use feeders or corn. If we still hunt we have to do it the old fashioned way and just find where they are moving. WIth all the flood waters up this week. im going hunt a ridge in the swamp this afternoon. :D I need some sausage and ground meat. A good doe is goin to do me good.

There´s a significance difference between deer hunting, and deer shooting.

What's the diff?

Aren't most shot from a stand/blind when they pass by close enough to "shoot"?

No hunting is working your a$$ off most off season days. Putting out game cameras, scouting for tracks, rubs, and scrapes. Fighting mosquitoes, snakes, and gators everyday, just to have the chance at 1 or 2 deer a year. Deer shooting is going somewhere and climbing up a stand and waiting until something walks out to shoot, then going back and paying the guides.

at least 60% of my time is dedicated to hunting right now. Ive been in a pair of hip boots in the atchafalaya basin every chance i get trying to find a good place to deer hunt. Ive been working at my lease getting places scouted out for this upcoming season also. Ive also been brushing duck blinds every weekend so that when it opens ill be able to hunt. And everything ive done so far, is out of a boat since none of our leases or public lands to hunt are accessible by vehicles.

Ya'll must not have many deer then. Must be why so many from La. come here to hunt every year.

I could show you 35-40 from one spot on most any day. Hasn't always been that way though. It takes some restraint & management to get where we are with the deer population.

Good thing is.....I don't have to pay a guide, just as all my friends and neighbors don't either.

Have the Best Stop make your deer sausage, 50-50 with pork butt. I usually asked for about half their normal seasoning as well.....and it was still spicey.

I also froze my deer meat in water, and then made small batches of fresh sausage throughout the year. Freezing 100 pounds of sausage at one time is a pain in the arse and then the stuff likely gets freezer burned.

Good luck on the hunt.

Where i live there is no such thing as high ground though. EVERYTHING floods here with the moderate rain. Right now all 4 major rivers at here are in flood stages and still havent crested. So no we do not have a huge deer population. But we do have some of the biggest duck populations in the south. I could hunt everyday and maybe see 15-20 deer the entire season. Many of the people down here go out of state to deer hunt, just like many out of staters come here to duck hunt.

What my cajun friend said.

I´ve never considered shooting over a food plot or over a feeder, hunting. It´s deer shooting.

Spending time in February scouting for the following year while everyone else is watching the SuperBowl is deer hunting in my book.

And yeah, I´ve killed some nice deer from my climbers at very close range. But I got close enough to deer others weren´t seeing not because I was baiting or hunting a food plot, but because I had scouted and looked for likely spots to catch a buck as he made his way to feed or breed after nightfall.

I´ve also "shot" my share of does on foodplots, but never considered that I was hunting.

I make my own mix 8). use a 65/35 mix. I use alot more ground meat than sausage. I use it in spaghetti, chili, hell even hamburger helper :D (give me a break i dont have a wife to cook for me.) Thanks hope to get one tonight. Leavin work in a few minutes to head to the lease.
