My daughter is just a baby. But Grandma wants to start a cow herd for her. I have found some old (8 Plus ) registered angus cows. They are bred and supposed to weigh around 1300lbs which work for because they would run on irrigated pastures. 2 questions: Are we silly even thinking about bred cows this old? What would they be worth?

FWIW..i don't think it's a silly idea. even at 8 years old those cows got a few years left, or least i would expect them to around here. but it all comes down to what they will cost you. check your local markets and get an idea of what those older cows are worth in your area. do you need them to be registered? you might be able to find some commercial cows for less money. good luck

An 8yr old cow to me is in her prime, or ought to be as Justin said.

As for their value, that depends on what you think you can make off them. Markets being what they are these days, I don't like paying very much for cows, there's just so much risk. On the other hand if I find something I really like and want it, I usually pay what the owner is asking. Go with your gut, it doesn't lie.

I'd go for it if the cattle are in decent condition. An 8 year old cow ought'a give ya 3 or 4 more calves before falling off if they don't have to travel rough country. Some will suprise ya and be productive into their teens without a tooth in their head. Check to see if they've been vaccinated, pour-on'd and preg checked safe. Then i'd get some as long as the price tag is agreeable. Round' here that would be $700 to a thousand a head. Good luck and keep us in the loop on how it works out. :D Tell Grandma i think she's pretty neat!

Having just gone through that I all for it IF:

You remember that it's their Project (Your job is to HELP THEM Learn and Teach.)
To many try to Live or Relive through their Get.
I feel the Idea should be to Teach the child to Think, Learn and make decisions and hopefully they'll learn to trust your thinking and come to you For Your Thoughts.

Done right this this can open good Commutations between you.

My last words were always - What do you think? or What would you Do?
