Coyotes kill hiker in eastern Canada

(AFP) – 8 hours ago

OTTAWA — A young woman hiking alone in a national park in Canada's easternmost Nova Scotia province died overnight after being attacked by two coyotes, officials said Wednesday.

The 19-year-old Toronto woman was hiking along the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, described in brochures as a seven-kilometer (4.3-mile) loop for "intermediate" hikers, leading to a whale lookout.

Police found the badly injured woman after receiving an emergency call from other hikers who heard her screams Tuesday, said Brigdit Leger, a spokeswoman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

She was airlifted to hospital, but later died of her "very, very serious" injuries, Leger told AFP.

Two coyotes at the scene were "extremely aggressive" when authorities arrived, she said. Both animals fled into the woods after police fired a shot at one, possibly injuring it.

One of the animals was eventually tracked down and killed by wildlife officials. The trail is now closed as authorities hunt for the second animal, said Germaine Lemoine of Parks Canada.

Coyote attacks are "very, very rare," she said. "Coyotes are normally afraid of humans. This is a very irregular occurrence."

Originally from the southern United States, coyotes began migrating north in the mid-20th century, occupying former wolf habitats along the continent's eastern seaboard.

They first arrived in Nova Scotia in 1977, according to wildlife officials.

Preying usually on deer and hares, they can weigh as much as 25 kilograms (55 pounds).

I have heard of them going after young children in California. Also an attempted attack on an adult back in '97 in North Dakota during that massive winter, but considering the source on that report I doubt it.

Buckeye?

Saw it on the evening news. She was a musician on a tour of the Maritimes. She had a scheduled concert tonight.

Unbelievable and tragic. Probably not allowed to carry a gun in that area (?) but would Pepper Spray or Bear Spray have saved her? It seems like some line of defense against predators, be it animal or human, is really a good idea these days.

Some enviro dork was explaining on the news tonight that it is because we are encroaching on their habitat.
Need more folks wearing coyote coats.

I'm not sure but I don't think Pepper spray is legal in Canada. :?

ILH I have heard of those ,as well as attacks on young children in the burbs around expanding areas in Calgary, not so much this year but last year we heard alot about aggressive coyotes.

The coyotes have gotten very brave around here since we lost Steffie, who knew one dog had so much control. We usually heard them but never saw them ,now they blatantly come right up to the yard; they were eaten apples from my tree. I moved the llama and now it is quiet again..

Very sad story for sure, she was a very talented young woman my prayers go out to all of her loved ones .

I do not know either BMR. I think I will check on that as I run or walk alone now ,after losing my Steff.

Reminds me of that joke about the Alaska Dept of Wildlife Bear Advisory and the use of pepper spray.

For officials to say that this is a rare occurance is B.S. Just like when they were telling us that there were no wolves or grizzlies in Idaho or Montana and needed to be introduced.

They need to get there butts off of their soft chairs and quit listening to green peace crap and get out in the woods

Coyotes have been increasingly becoming more aggressive now that they have to compete more with the wolves for food. I have had several friends and acquaintances have encounters with coyotes

The concern here in NE Texas is coyotes crossing with dogs. The result is a much more aggressive coyote. Our County has a $20 bounty on coyotes for that reason. I have observed what I think was a hybird and it was much less cautious of me than a normal coyote. It would come up to about 40 yards of me while it's mate would stay much farther back.

Pepper Spray and the Law

We cannot ship Pepper Sprays to Canada. Canadian customers looking to buy pepper spray should go to Mace Canada where you'll be able to purchase both dog and bear spray to be shipped within Canada. There are the only legal versions.

Here is a short summary of Pepper Spray Laws in the United States.

Pepper spray is legal in all 48 contiguous states, but there are restrictions in some of them.
In Washington DC - Possession of pepper spray must be registered with the DC Metropolitan Police
Massachusetts- Pepper spray can only be sold by a firearms dealer
New York - Pepper spray can only be sold by a firearms dealer or a pharmacist and the seller must keep a record of the sale
Michigan- Pepper spray must be less than 2% and only OC sprays are allowed. No CN/CS (tear gas)
Wisconsin - Pepper spray is limited to containers of 15-60 grams, maximum strength of 10% and no dyes or CN/CS

Pepper Sprays can only be shipped by GROUND. Pepper Sprays cannot be shipped outside of the United States or to Hawaii, New York, Massachusetts or Wisconsin. Only Michigan approved pepper spray can be shipped to Michigan. Dog and bear repellants can also be shipped to Michigan and to New York. Animal Repellant Spray is also legal thoughout the United States, the only pepper spray that is legal in Canada is for animals - dogs and bears.

I have purchased "Bear Blaster" type pepper sprays in hunting and fishing stores in Canada.

Last cans I bought were in Chetwynd BC - if that liberal, left leaning province will sell it - I am sure it will be available in other provinces.

Big cans with a solid stream spray.

Lots of folks carry it and it is quite legal otherwise it would not be in retail stores.

It had a range of about 20 feet and trust me it works.

I used some on a bull one day - he hated it but he did leave.

It was that or die - he made the wise choice.

Cheers

BC

My boy had bought a little can of pepper spray.....never told us, but I wouldn't have cared anyway. One of his friends (in band class, nevertheless) wanted to know what this stuff smelled like, so he sprayed just a little bit on his shoe. Sounds like it cleared the room. I tried to be stern when he was telling me about it.....but did you ever have one of those moments when you have to leave the room because you can't keep from laughing? My bad.

BC

Some parts of BC have been putting conservative MPs in Ottawa longer than any other part of Canada, probably including where you're from.

Anyway, it's a shame that girl lost her life like she did. I'm pretty surprised it happened, I've seen coyotes come up to nearly dead calves only to run away when the calf moved a little. I guess if there is a positive in the whole deal it may be that people take a step back and realize that the utopian tree hugger image is wrong, that Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress.

Kinda like that meathead that figured he could live with the Grizzlies and put it all on film? Who'da thunk it? He found a Grizzly that was actually aggressive and low and behold - it ate him!!!! What a surprise!!??!!

That was obviously different than what's happened to this girl in N.S., a sad story for sure. We get coyotes come in the yard and Molly doesn't chase them off like she used to. I'd like to get another dog to boost her confidence, but can't decide what kind.

You mean the one about the Bear Scat that had bells in it and smelled like pepper?
