Coyotes kill hiker in eastern Canada

Whitewing it was in a book my husbands aunt wrote about the blizzards.

Know what you are talking about HD. Got them coyotes coming in close here too. Worried that they might try to take one of our Corgis. Had one morning when they wouldn't even leave the door step to go out in the yard.

Reminds me of the story my oldest daughter was just telling me...

Last week she drove a girlfriend that needed medical attention to Billings- and after her outpatient surgery drove her back....She drove the girlfriends car- which was not running right- and 10 miles south of Malta- ran out of gas because of all the gas it was sucking up.....

A very nice older lady stopped and picked them up...On the way to Malta they discussed how bad the car was burning gas-- and the lady mentioned how her car was a lemon- and that her husband almost wished she wiped it out hitting a deer so the insurance could pay up and they could get another one....
Anyway the daughter said about 5 miles out of Malta- a coyote ran out of the ditch- clobbered the front and side of the ladies car (with pretty extensive damage)....

Thats about the first time I'd heard of someone hitting a coyote- as usually they are pretty wary...

Kinda like that meathead that figured he could live with the Grizzlies and put it all on film? Who'da thunk it? He found a Grizzly that was actually aggressive and low and behold - it ate him!!!! What a surprise!!??!!

That was obviously different than what's happened to this girl in N.S., a sad story for sure. We get coyotes come in the yard and Molly doesn't chase them off like she used to. I'd like to get another dog to boost her confidence, but can't decide what kind.

Get a Coonhound!

About a month ago I was just south of the Fort Peck dam and the Hiway patrol passed me. It wasn't long he had his lights on and was pulled over to the side of the road. Just before we caught up to him we saw a coyote dying on the edge of the road and he was out checking for damage. I think he got away luckier then the coyote.

It's a sad deal for sure but one paper said they were two yearling pups-I find it kind of hard to fathom that they'd be able to kill a healythy nineteen year old girl-I wonder if she just balled up and let them chew her up maybe got so scared she didn't think straight. You can buy bear spray at any sporting good store and I think it's alot more powerful than ordinary pepper spray-just ask Ty he blasted himself with it one day when the wind shifted-a big boar bear was trying to drag a yearling of a tee and kill it ten yards from him and he was on his kneees pouring tears.

Last cans I bought were in Chetwynd BC - if that liberal, left leaning province will sell it - I am sure it will be available in other provinces.
BC

Some parts of BC have been putting conservative MPs in Ottawa longer than any other part of Canada, probably including where you're from.

Anyway, it's a shame that girl lost her life like she did. I'm pretty surprised it happened, I've seen coyotes come up to nearly dead calves only to run away when the calf moved a little. I guess if there is a positive in the whole deal it may be that people take a step back and realize that the utopian tree hugger image is wrong, that Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress.

True - after all I was on the wrong side of the coastal mountain range. 8)

No, but we had one when I was growing up, and there was a few other coonhounds around the neighborhood back then. There was no gas stealin' or predators close by. Now it's all bird dogs, cow dogs or house dogs. Nowadays, coyote tracks come right into the yard, deer bed down behind the house 20 ft away, people drive into the yard and no barkin'! :? I could (not that I would) walk into any yard around here and take 5 gallons, easy. Need to get back to a guard dog. 8)

On the news tonight, 5 coyotes managed to kill a yearling horse. The owners just didn't know the coyotes were capable of the job.

Guess I'm just grumpy again, wolves killed 4 of my ewes last night.

A great pyrenees will work great_I actually saw mine kill a yote while I was out riding.

A Great Pyr is a fearsome thing when it gets in the battle mode. They are a big, strong, stubborn dog. Ours was a gentle as a kitten with us but sure didn't warm up to strangers or other dogs.

The concern here in NE Texas is coyotes crossing with dogs. The result is a much more aggressive coyote. Our County has a $20 bounty on coyotes for that reason. I have observed what I think was a hybird and it was much less cautious of me than a normal coyote. It would come up to about 40 yards of me while it's mate would stay much farther back.

I recall that being a concern many years ago when coyotes began showing up in the S. Louisiana marshes.....coydogs I do believe they were called. However, I think the cross-breeding theory has been disproven with DNA testing.

A pack of domestic dogs can be a menace worse than a pack of coyotes.

You´ve sure got that right. They can be much more aggressive and show much less fear of human activity than coyotes. My older brother lost a wonderful small dog of his that was attacked and killed by a pack of domestic dogs in his own back yard.
