Disformed calf

A calf was born where one of his nostrils not only huge but open at the bottom so there is no seperation between that nostril and his mouth. He can run his tongue out of his nostril and if not holding the bottle just right it comes out his nostril. Right now i am bottle feeding him and he is doing really well with it. My question being will he be able to eat hay and graze?

It's not I think I'll get anything for him at the salebarn it's thinking he'd go in the freezer.

Cleft palate is what ya got. I had one of those and it could never nurse as it can't build up suction with it's tongue to latch onto the cow.

It's a sad ordeal for sure.

I agree that it is a cleft pallate. Reach inside his mouth and see if he has a roof at the top of his mouth. If he doesn't, there is only one answer for this calf.

I'm sorry for your misfortune and sorry for the calf. They always look extra sweet when there is something wrong with them.

It's never a good deal when this happens. He'll probably go for awhile. We had a calf a few years back, when he was born the front half was normal but his tail was off to the side and he had two little hind legs. He couldn't get up to nurse. We had to put him down. We all so had a calf that its front legs were bent inside so that he walked on his knees he lived for 3 months. But on your calf I don't if it will be able to chew later on?

The only way to know for sure would be to feel in hs mouth. I've had a couple over the years that could lick their own boogers through that 'canal' between the mouth and nostril, but they still had a pallet. In fact, one ended up being a heckuva steer- from the side.lol
