I would be interested in starting up a cow donation to those that lost so many. I wouldn't miss one cow as many on here wouldn't also. I wonder how we could get a regional cow/drive going I'm sure that there are more people that feel the same way. If I lost 1/2 my cows I'd be screwed I know what their insurance companies are going to say that the cows suffocated and didn't drown so your out of luck I had that happen about 10 years ago.

That is a thoughful idea Denny. Rather than trying to haul cattle, I would be more interested in donating cash. If someone knows of a good rancher fund, please post the info here.

Kinda interesting... I PM'd Fasters, this morning about doing something like this. I don't have a cow, but would sure donate some cash.

A few years ago, my cowboy poet friend, R P Smith, had a bunch of heifers drift into a river. I think he lost 35. By the next spring, he had 40 bred heifers.
What a blessing it was to him, and also the guys that donated.

Cow's Cash Trucking what ever. I know cash is nice but imagine someone rolling in and dropping off a load of bred females.

I broke my hip 8 years ago or so and the neighbors finished my haying and hauled all my hay in for me it was overwhelming. It makes me :cry2: up just writing about it.

Ok, folks, LET'S JUST DO IT!!! I'll try and find out the details; which might take a day or two.......thanks WP for your PM and Denny for your 'donate a cow idea.......and getting the ball rolling. WE CAN DO THIS!

A friend called this morning reporting that some rancher they know......lost 500 head............gives me the chills again............

I think we need to start with a bank that will handle the funds.....I like the Pioneer Banks that are located in SD. So I'll start there. Anyone that has any other ideas, bring it here. I'll ask Macon for a 'sticky' so information gleaned won't get moved. I'm not sure how to go about the 'donate a cow' thing (great idea, Denny!!) but I guess call a stockyards........I'll start with St. Onge. This is a ranchers.net GROUP EFFORT so any ideas or information will be appreciated!

Also, after we get going on this, we'll need to get the word out. I would say through the Tri-State Livestock News and the Cattle Business Weekly. Can you thing of any other regional publication?

What about all of us putting it on our facebook page or any other social media that is used. I really feel that others besides ranchers would help with
this in a monetary way.

Feel free to add your suggestions. This is just my idea of a starting point.
Working together we can and will make it work!

Great idea!!!! I can talk to some of the sale barns about that.
Can you talk to some, strawking? Anyone else?

After we get some money, calves, etc dontated, how will we decide who receives what???? That would be the sticky part......ideas anyone?
I'm thinking about how to divvy it up.......so that it's fair.......for all......

I found an old article from 1997 discussing this very same thing and if anyone happens to know the people mentioned in the article, it may be a start. Article here: http://www.csmonitor.com/1997/1103/110397.us.us.1.html/(page)/2

Edited for wrong name

I think the key is to get a non profit group to ring lead... RFD TV may be able to organize something also.

I think the farm and ranch guide was involved in one of these deals in the tough winters in the mid to late 90's where a lot of cows were lost to excessive snow and cold I don't remember the year for sure.Might have been a hay deal I don't remember for sure.

What we need is some man power. I see lots of excellent ideas here, just need someone to do the legwork. Jigs, can you contact RFD-TV? That is a great idea, BTW.

Who wants to try the tv stations?

Who wants to try the radio stations?

Maybe mrj would contact the SD Stockgrowers?

Who wants to try the publications? Denny, can you call Farm and Ranch Guide?
How about Fence Post? Who gets that publication?

Wyoming Wind, will you call Wyoming Roundup? Who wants to call Tri-State Livestock News? Cattle Business Weekly?

I'll do the livestock auctions in SD, Montana and Wyoming unless someone else wants to do all or part of them. Just speak up. I don't know the owners in SD, except Paul Hoffman at Lemmon. I do know some in Montana and will contact them.

Soapweed, are you up to contacting the auctions in Nebraska?

Right now, we need to get the word out...livestock auctions do a lot of
advertising, and it won't cost them any more to add something about the
Ranchers.net relief fund. Is that what you all want to call it? Or can you think of something better? I'm open for suggestions.

I think the first order of business is to contact the banks involved to set up a place for monetary dontations. Then the livestock auctions can get that word out. I called today, but didn't get the person I needed. I will try again tomorrow. If you have a good relationship with a bank, please contact them and get back to us. More than one bank can receive funds I would think.
I think the banks we contact to handle the money should be in SD since that is where the devastation is. Does anyone have a different idea?

Again, how do we decide who is the receipent of what we get donated; money or cattle? That has me more concerned than anything. :???:

Thanks for the interest. Remember, this is a joint effort!!! If you have ideas, or suggestions, just post them here!! The more the better!

Deciding how to distribute the proceeds is a big concern. Personally, I would rather donate directly to friends who had significant losses, knowing full well where the money would go.

There seems to be several outlets already in place who are receiving donations, like the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association. Maybe there are enough already without Ranchers.net getting involved. I do very much encourage all donations, but cash or a check is much easier to ship than is livestock. Just my thoughts, for what they are worth.

I thought I would post the following post from SD Stockgrowers FB page.

RANCHERS: We have people calling to offer help gathering, moving, sorting, and hauling livestock. Many have horses and four-wheelers and are willing to travel to you.
If you are a rancher who needs help with these tasks, please call 605-342-0429 or message us so we can coordinate help to your place.

We're working with SD Office of Emergency Management to coordinate volunteers who can help to bury and collect dead livestock on private property and hope to have details to you by the weekend

VOLUNTEERS: Please sit tight for now. We'll begin sending requests for specific help in the coming days, but we need to get a system in place for handling all your calls and we need to get a clear understanding of what help is needed and where.

Thank you to every one who has volunteered and reached out to our producers.
South Dakota is an amazing place and we'll help each other rebuild!

After sleeping on it and then reading your post above, I'm with you, Soapweed. There are plenty of people stepping up to the plate now. Too many makes it confusing........as we have already seen right here......so it's my thought that we just cool it and support what is being put in place by others. Deciding who gets what.........that could get real sticky and I don't want to be part of that. Raising money, donating cattle, etc is one thing but deciding who gets what is entirely different.

If anyone from ranchers.net wants to take over and go with it, please feel free to do so. I'm happy seeing that there are so many others that are stepping up to help.
