Last winter while in DeRidder at the Cajun Classic Barrel Race (when it was so bitter cold) there was a booth, that was selling some hand stuff....said it had sea salt, and some kinda oil...ya scrub your hands with it.....then rinse in warm water. dry your hands, and put their lotion on. Felt wonderfulllllllllllllllllllll......I"ve since ran out, and become desperate LOL

So.....I took about 1/2 a tsp of cooking oil....and 1/2 tsp table salt...scrubbed by hands felt exactly the same..minus the pleasant perfumy smell.....who cares about that when it fixes your hands...then apply your favorite hand lotion...... feels so good. Works great!!!!

Just thought I"d share that cheap method I've found. Cuz with all of us out muckin stalls, doin all the horsey/cow stuff we do. I"m sure some of your hands are dry and rough too, and need a little TLC.

Happy scrubbin!!!!! It's like a mini massage for your hands!!!!!

Cornmeal and Avon Skin So soft will do the trick too......leaves hands even a little nicer :) Prescribed 30 plus years ago by a dermatologist for the dry cracking hands --- it works!

I use Avon Skin So Soft in the shower....but only in the winter time!!!!! Call me an oddity or whatever, but the well known use of it to keep skeeters away doesn't work for me. If I even get a lil bit on me in the summer time, THEY LOVE IT, it attracts them to me...and they EAT ME ALIVE!!!!

So....that's reserved for winter...when there are no skeeters.

Well now in the winter pour it in some corn meal and use that to clean your hands....it gets the grime out of every crevasse too :)

Julie, your mention of a cornmeal remedy reminds me that Dad used to use Cornhusker's lotion on his hands and cow's teats.

I don't think the stuff had corn meal in it but it might have had corn oil. As I remember it was very thick cloudy looking stuff, but maybe that was because he kept it out in the cold barn.

Of course Bag Balm and other udder ointments are good for dry skin. And Vick's Vaporub.

Jersey Lilly this is a little off the subject but we had a guy using skin so soft and water for horse fly repellent. It sounds crazy but he just blended it with water and it seemed to work as well as anything else does. Have you ever heard of that?

I used the Skin so Soft on horses --and it did help with the mosquitoes...not sure it did flies. And they smelled good --:)

John..I think the concept behind the cornmeal is it is fine grained and it takes the oil of the SSS down into the tiny places in your hands...especially if they are rough. That way it cleans and treats in the same effort. Soap is drying and in the winter it is just over the top for people already fighting dry cracking skin.

Make sure you drink plenty of water, most people don't drink enough and are slightly dehydrated which causes the dry skin. Drink more water and you won't have near the problem.

I have no sweat glands in the palms of my hands. neither does my dad. Watched him fight dry cracked hands all his life. Really bad...they crack and bleed, and hurt. You might say I'm a lotionaholic in the first place because of this. But this rememdy....with the cooking oil seems to work much better than just using lotion alone. The salt acts as a exfoliator...gets rid of the dead skin, and the newer softer skin is exposed.

I've not tried SSS on the horses, and probably won't. Knowin the skeeters in our area seem to be attracted to it, that'd just be inviting them onto the horses. I use vinegar in the horses water and the dogs water. Keeps fleas away from the dogs, and flys and ticks off the horses. We do use some fly spray on the horses too that's an all natural product, durin the worst of the fly season. Bug Blaster made by Finish Line. Was a free sample, and it works great. So that's what I'll be buyin as far as spray for the horses.

one spring with the crusty snow, embryonic fluid from pulling calves, calve saliva, colostrum, cold weather and muck my hand were so cracked and corn huskers didn't help a bit. Well I lamb the end of April after calving there was still snow but I like my ewes undressed before lambing and I started shearing. Wow the first night after shearing a few dozen ewes my hands were healed.
My wife and I use Merino Lanolin skin care (you can Google it) it works great, stays on all day and is not sticky. Second choice is Wool Wax cream skin care formula-10-, March Labs, inc

I use udder balm, some old man came in the clinic one day and bought the biggest can of udder balm we had, and said it worked meracles on his hands and feet. I tried it out and got hooked

He didnt own any cows, or other animals for that matter, he came in the vet clinic for the udder balm, silly old man

Works like a charm !

I've never had it attract skeeters to the horses here Lily and we're as hot and humid as you in the summer time.

Terry,Mt. has a lab? That's news to me.

This thread was very interesting. Thanks everyone.

FH, I wonder if we could substitute Vigortone mineral for the cornmeal?

When we combine the mineral with the Avon stuff we could call it Vigavon!!!! Or Avonortone????!!!   :D  :D

Do you use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar????

Corium 21 is made of the best aloe vera grown. I bought some at the finals in Las Vegas a couple years ago and hands are cured from the deep cracks and bleeding. Spendy, but last a long time and sure worth it. Call 1-800-319-5114

I just use the white vinegar. But either would probably work.

How much vinegar per gallon of water do you use? When I had horses I used to top dress their oats with apple cider vinegar to keep the flies off of them. Never thought about using it in water.
