Or bad storm as is the case. Steer pen has a bit of a problem with the waterer.

Clearing a bit of snow to gain access to the water. The stuff was hard as a rock.

No buses today so I had a Snow day helper. :-)

My gosh, per. You really got dumped on.
That's how it looked at our place in 1997.

Aren't you glad you have good machinery to clear it out with?
Just think how hard it was years ago for people in storms like this.
That is for sure Faster. We haven't got the big artillery out yet, just doing the necessities right now. I kind of wish I had a cat.

Wow! We haven't had one of those yet this year and your pictures just made me really grateful . . .

That snow sure did pack in there! I'll bet the waterer was snug and "warm" when you got it dug out?

its been a couple years since we had drifts like those, not fun. the last storm we had that produced drifts like that was right in the middle of calving and lasted for about a week. :(

Reminds me of the good old snow storms we had in Ontario as a kid. Don't see them like that anymore. Hope you're dug out soon Per. Just think of all the moisture come spring :D

My Dad kept saying this could happen. I have the essential stuff dug out and am going to wait for warmer weather to get at the rest. Burnt, that was my thought on the waterer. Couldn't get it better insulated. I only dug out the one side and moved the steers to that pen. I cleaned a driveway down the road, his wife called and said her husband had started digging with a shovel and she was worried given his previous heart attack. 4 men and a week would have been needed to deal with the hard packed snow in that tree lined lane. The bonus part was when they wanted to pay (I always refuse my neighbors) it dawned on me that he is an electrician with the City of Calgary and I have a small wiring dilemma on a little project. Once I explained it wasn't up an old pole and was in the shop he thought that was great.

Always great to get the opportunity to do a favour for someone with a talent you can use!
My neighbours have Cats and are very good operators. 2 hrs with a swamp 6 will move more than I can in a week.
There just ain't no easy way to do the alleys and gates. Sometimes it's easier to take the gates off and push right through.

Looks like you had anywhere from 3 inches to 15 feet (give or take) of snow. When we get hit with one of those, we can expect some thaw and settling, but you guys will have those drifts until?? I suppose they will sometimes blow shut on you again the rest of the winter. Running cattle through the winter is a lot more work for you northern friends than for us guys. Hang in there! There will be lots of green when the white is gone.

Those are some nice looking drifts per! :-)

Just thank goodness it wasn't another 10 or 15 degrees cooler. We only had 25 klick winds, but moved our fair share of snow the last few days also.

Man I'm tellin y'all that stuff just ain't right. We had 5" here an the schools are closed for the 2nd day.

5 inches here barely gets the plows out.Closeing school its got to be a very serious blizzard they don't want to waste a day of summer here making up a school day over a little snow.

It looks like you could use a big tree grove on the northwest side of the corrals. Good luck digging out.
All of our tree grove areas are 6' deep with snow in and down stream from them. One set of cows was in a willow grove that is now not capable of sheltering anything. I think the portable shelters look the best for this type of storm. 40 plus mph winds and heavy snow for 2 or 3 days (lost track of time :? )

Took less than a minute to move this shelter away from the snow.
