WHY give any antibiotic unless the animal is sick- and then only what is needed to cure it? And then redtag those that have been treated....

FDA Urging Limited Antibiotics In Meat
06/28/2010 09:42AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is urging meat producers to limit the amount of antibiotics they give animals in response to public health concerns about the drugs.

The FDA said the use of antibiotics in meat poses a "serious public health threat" because they create antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can infect humans who eat the meat. The agency is recommending that producers limit antibiotics unless the drugs are necessary for animal health and suggesting they only use them with the oversight of a veterinarian.

The agency announced the draft guidelines in the Federal Register on Monday. The FDA said they are expecting to issue more specific guidelines in the near future.

I don't see this as Big Bro or nannying....Its just good sound advice- the same as the medical community worldwide has been saying for years- and that many consumers have been asking for...

But some will always believe they know more than the scientific and medical communities-- and not take the advice and cut corners in their greed to make an extra buck - and eventually then Government will have to become Big Bro and pass laws for everyone because of those few....And usually when government finally reacts- they overreact...

Perhaps you did not read this portion:

>>The agency announced the draft guidelines in the Federal Register on Monday. The FDA said they are expecting to issue more specific guidelines in the near future<<

I personally NEVER give antibiotics unless an animal truly is sick. I do not use implants. I am about as 100% all natural as you can be.

I just get sick of Big Brother thinking he needs to control every facet of our lives.

What about Al Gore and his manipulating of science for his own personal greedy good? Sound science is one thing, but "science" just for the sound of it is quite another.

Look at all the laws that are being passed in the name of Gore's Global Warming, which after it was found to not be happening, was changed to "Climate Change." Is it any wonder many of us are skeptical about Government and their infinite wacky wisdom?

I didn't know Al Gore was a scientist or a Doctor :???:

Ironically on that topic- I saw a Zogby poll the other day- where 40% of all Americans think enviromental problems are the greatest danger facing the world today....
That number was even higher in the more educated Nikes (born 1965-1979) and First Globals (born 1979-1990) generations.....And where more of the older generations think of themselves as citizens of their state or country- more of the First Globals think of themselves as citizens of Planet Earth...

(The poll was taken this spring- but I'm not sure it was before or after the Gulf Disaster...)

I don't know what else to say but WOW! Every person lucky and blessed enough to live here in America should think of themselves as citizens of this great country FIRST AND LAST!!! Are you suggesting we ignore our sovernty and just all become one big happy family? I can't even wrap my mind around the numbness that thought. While I too am a big fan of the earth as a whole, I will never surrender my freedom and patriotism for this great country. And I pity those of you who feel otherwise! Gore is a quack of the highest order. If you choose to follow his religion that is up to you! But quit forcing it on the rest of us!

Leaning H- not forcing anything upon anyone- and I agree with both you and Soap on Gore...I also was surprised with the idea that the younger generation (20-30) thinks of themselves as citizens of the Planet Earth.. But when you look at how they've grown up with globalism- it may start to explain it...They were also described as much more diverse and multi-cultural...
And they and the Woodstockers (age 46-64) now make up the largest generational groups in the country...

Which may begin to explain why our country is currently being run the way it is! Apparently, those groups vote. I realize you arent forcing the extreme eviromental gospel on me but the vast majority of the folks on the liberal side of isle are doing exactly that!

Getting back to your original post..... It states....The agency is recommending that producers limit antibiotics unless the drugs are necessary for animal health and suggesting they only use them with the oversight of a veterinarian.

Isnt that what the huge majority of producers in this country already do? I don't know anyone who shoots animals full of antibiotics just for giggles! If it's a feedlot problem why not mandate it for feedlots? Oh wait! The government NEVER over-reacts or over governs do they? Just another attempt to save the world from a non existent problem to make the groups you described above feel warm and fuzzy and vote them in again! Nuts!

Here's a little insight as to why the 20-30 age group think of themselves as "Planet Earthers"---they fit into the big Earth Day push in the educational system. Not that I am against Earth Day, but I certainly don't agree with all of the literature that they hand out to the kids. It used to be about planting trees and picking up garbage, now it is more environmental and industry oriented.

Apparently some don't Leanin H- and even lie about it when they do it (which PO's consumers and they then ask for more oversight/policing)...Tyson got convicted of selling juiced up chickens labeled as "no antibiotics"...

-LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that Tyson Foods Inc. routinely gave chickens an antibiotic that can be used in humans, even though the company had defended its "raised without antibiotics" claim by saying it only used an antibiotic not used in people.

The world's largest meat producer used gentamicin on its poultry, which has been administered for more than 30 years in the United States to treat a variety of infections in humans.

Springdale-based Tyson, responding to a federal lawsuit over labeling its poultry as "raised without antibiotics," already said it used ionophores in its chicken feed. Though widely considered an antibiotic, ionophores are not used to treat illnesses in humans and thus are not believed to raise human health concerns.

"In contrast to information presented by Tyson Foods Inc., (inspectors) found that they routinely used the antibiotic gentamicin to prevent illness and death in chicks, which raises public health concerns," Raymond said in a statement.

What explains it is 50 years of liberal education (re-education camps?) come home to roost.

I had found this information. Confusing, isn't it?

CDC, NIH SAY NO STUDIES LINKING ANTIBIOTIC USE IN ANIMALS WITH HUMAN RESISTANCE
The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health held a hearing
Wednesday on human antibiotic resistance and the threat it could pose to
public health. Testifying before the committee were Dr. Thomas Frieden,
director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Dr. Anthony
Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases. Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., in his opening
remarks, said it is important to know the effects of using antibiotics in
large numbers of animals without medical need. He went on to ask whether or
not giving large numbers of animals antibiotics for non-therapeutic
purposes as a preventative measure ran the risk of creating antibiotic
resistance. Dr. Frieden told the committee that public health experts have
recommended phasing out antibiotic growth promoters. Rep. Joe Pitts, R-Pa.,
defended animal agriculture, the use of antibiotics and the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration's antibiotic approval process. Pitts commented on the
need to focus on areas where science has shown there is concern, and that it is not agriculture. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., asked the witnesses if
there is a definitive study to link the use of antibiotics in animal feed
to changes in resistance in humans. Reps. John Shimkus, R-Ill., and Roy
Blunt, R-Mo., also asked about such studies. The witnesses said there are
not. Dingell stated that the nexus between antibiotic use in animals and
human antibiotic-resistance is not known.

But why work with facts when you can assume they are bad for ya? :???: Why, because it is part of a larger agenda to destroy agriculture as we know it! These folks march to their own tune and can only see their own toes. Because we are rural and value traditions, they figure we must be ignorant to progress. These folks twist words and studies into whatever fits their movement. But the over-all plan is to enlighten us poor dumb ranchers to the folly of our ways! Scare tactics are the norm and folks in big cities buy it hook, line and sinker. Sustainable ag, Community gardens, CSA's, the organic movement, all are simply doing EXACTLY what our grandparents did on their farms and ranches. (what most of us still do today) The sad part is, many use it to fracture and tear down other ag producers who feel differently. Thus driving a wedge between folks who need to stand together against the baloney that is spread our direction.

I agree FH, seems like depending on what answer you want all you need to do is find the right scientist. :???:
