Though i havnt started yet i am looking at moving back into the business in a year or two...few more left overseas....and i am curious what you all use for a finance program. I am curious how you all track your finances and out puts, in puts etc.

I was looking at quicken home and business but then i read a review on amazon from someone who had to have been in the ag business from what he was saying, that had nothing but issues.

So know i am curious

There's things out there for this, but nobody wants to talk about it! :???: Also takes more than a day for people to talk about somethin' they don't want to talk about! :lol:

My Dad ranched for 50 years. NEVER had a budget! :shock:
NEVER balanced his checkbook! :shock:
If he didn't need it he didn't buy it.
Never had a problem with a banker, if he did, he just went to the next one.


I use quicken 2003. Mostly just keep track of checkbook and loans.
Don't know why I'm keeping track of all this stuff, most of it is useless info!
Should go back to my Dad's method.

My point is, don't get caught up in sophisticated financial info when there's work to be done!
That's what the banker gets paid for! :P Just provide him with the basic information, he'll get back to you with the "important" info! :wink:
 
I use Quicken 2003. It's simple and easy to use, gives me the information I want. Don't let one persons unfavorable review stop you, do a little more research. My banker and tax accountant are both satisfied with the info I provide them.
 
I'm probably the last person who should reply to this because I've never done the books. It would drive me bonkers because of how I transpose numbers endlessly!

Anyway, the 'bookkeeper' here does not trust that info on a home computer, no matter what safeguards it may have. It is kept on multiple column ledger pages to suit the necessary headings he uses.

It does seem to me I've read about some ranch tailored computer programs that might give the rancher more complete information on what is happening with his cows, such as calves weaned versus cows exposed, weight gains, and about anything one might try to do with their land and cattle trying to make a profit.

There probably is information on such programs at Land Grant colleges and county Extension offices.

Congratulations on putting thought into how you want to do things well before you jump in to it. That should give you an edge.
