Fire

There was a lightning strike at about 8:50 this morning. Started a fire and the fire just blew up. I thought they had it at around 3:00 this afternoon. The west edge got away from them. It is sort of headed this way. Although it looks to be climbing the hills to the south east of us. I was down by the school and over heard them say they were going to shut Burnt River road down. I hurried home. We are under stage 2. Be packed and ready to go. First picture is down by the school at 1:30. After that is on my way home at about 6:45. The fire is just above a neighbors house that is up the draw in one of those shots.

When I finally got to sleep at 2:30 there was 3 pump trucks parked around my house. And the flame stopped less than 100 yards from the hose. Most of the 1,200 acres I own is black along with a lot of my neighbors property. pictures later.

Amazing power of prayer. We got a ton of messages and phone calls from people saying they were praying for us. Some pictures

Nobody any structure unless there is a cabin back in the hills. Planes and helicopters flying like crazy. Lots of ground crew sitting around in the shade..

It is 116,000+ now. Level 3 down by Vale and headed toward Baker from here. It joined with the Cow Valley fire between Brogan and the Malhuer reservoir.

The good thing is with Burnt River canyon burning there will be a lot fewer rattle snakes. Always have to look at the bright side of things. I have heard it said that "Black is beautiful". That being the case I have a lot of beautiful land. Unfortunately I have neighbors losing an awful lot right now.

Durkee fire is now at 223,000+ and 0% contained. And a lightning storm rolled through this afternoon and started half a dozen new fires on the other side of the free way.

Our power is on. The AC and the water are working. I got 7 hours sleep in my own bed and a shower. I almost feel human this morning. The fires are still raging and I feel for my neighbors running on 3 hours sleep. But the fire can't get to my house and I needed a break.

This thin haze of smoke this past week has been a constant reminder to pray for whomever it concerns/ed.

The cows got moved down into the valley yesterday. They are in a cut over irrigated hay field by Grandma Jeans. The powers to be were going to back fire the area they were in. I have no idea why they would back fire there. No fire visible and you can see a long way that direction which they planned to burn up. A lot of cows from 4 or more owners got moved. Nothing like driving cows 4 miles or more at 3:00 in the afternoon on a 100+ degree day. I saw half a dozen calves that I can almost guarantee will be sick in the next day or two.

I had to run down to Ontario today to get some things. It is about 25 miles on the freeway from here to Farewell Bend. You can see black the entire way. Some is back a little ways and some is right on the edge of the freeway. One spot it jumped the freeway, the river, the RR tracks, and old hwy 30. Luckily it was at the site of the old lime plant. Above hwy 30 it ran on to the old plant site which is mostly bare dirt and rock. Once you start down the hill toward Farewell Bend you can see a long ways to the southwest. It is black for as far as you can see. I am thinking in about September I am going to have to take a drive on the back roads. For now I will wait for things to calm down and cool down. It is supposed to be 100 again tomorrow.
