Investigation into Hutterite Colony barn fire ends
GREAT FALLS -- The investigation into last week's barn fire at a Hutterite colony near Sand Coulee has ended.
According to the Sand Coulee Fire Chief Larry Butler, the fire at the Big Stone Hutterite Colony is believed to have started from combustion; Butler was not any more specific.
The Cascade County Sheriff's Office will not be investigating due to that conclusion.
The fire started around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16th, at the Big Stone Hutterite Colony off Goon Hill Road.
More than 11,000 tons of hay burned and the barn was completely destroyed in the fire.
Sand Coulee Fire Department was first on scene. They were supported by Black Eagle, Ulm, Gore Hill, Manchester, Vaughn, Sun Prairie, Fort Shaw, Montana Air National Guard, Malmstrom AFB, Sun River, Simms, and Belt Fire Departments.
The firefighters worked throughout the night and into Thursday to make sure the fire did not spread to other structures and bales of hay.
The total damage amount has not yet been released from insurance
Trucks crash while responding to fire near Vaughn:
NEAR VAUGHN -- Emergency crews were called out to a fire near Vaughn northwest of Great Falls on Tuesday afternoon, but some of the first-responders then needed rescuing after two Fort Shaw fire trucks collided.
One was a water tender, which tipped on its side; the driver was trapped inside and had to be extricated. The other was a pickup-truck.
Although the Mercy Flight helicopter from Benefis hospital was dispatched to the scene, the man was taken by ambulance to the hospital; he was alert and talking at the time, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Black Eagle Fire, along with Great Falls Emergency Services and Teton County ambulance, were also at the scene.
Highway 89 just west of Vaughn was shut down and traffic diverted for a few hours.
Other agencies were called to assist with the fire burning just a short distance away from the crash site, including Gore Hill.
The fire, on Sun Meadows Road, didn't burn any buildings, and no injuries have been reported from the fire.
Authorities are investigating to determine the cause of the crash, and the dollar amount of damage to the trucks.
