Well I guess we get what we ask for. We asked for rain earlier in the year and now we get it. It looks like I will not be harvesting any pecans this year, because the Trinity River will start covering our bottom place starting Monday and remain under water for up to 2 weeks. Our flood stage is 41 feet and they are now look for it to top out at 42 feet or higher. I guess the good Lord dose answer prays, but sometimes he goes a little over board for what you ask. The last time it came out (1991) it was a little over 2 miles wide where our place is. Dose anyone have a jet ski? You could sure have fun.

P.S. And we still have around 50 ac. of hay to get roll up in the bottom to that we are trying to get dry out to bale. This year seems be hell on us, I pray 2010 will be better.

my best friend growing up has a place outside of Giddens, i talked to him today and said everything he has is stuck at the place.......tractor, both trailers, mule, and 4 wheeler. I told him he could send that rain a little northwest if ya'll are tired of it. Good rains here but could use some running water to top of the tanks

We have had 8 to 10 inches of rain for the month of October. I would be more then happy to send you some. It's crazy last month we had cracks two inches wide in this black dirt and now water standing. But I will say this grass is belly deep on the cows and they are happy and a over flow will only make it better for next year. :D

Dangdest fall I can ever remember. I am 40 miles north of Tyler, So far in Oct. I have had 17.7 inches of rain, and since Sept. 1, 25 inches. Glad we are on sandy soil for the most part. Talked to a rancher in Lamar County last week, said they had 103 inches of rain so far this year. It's been a disaster for them. Couldn't get any hay put up can't get around in that heavy land, it's a real mess. I guess the El Nino is in full swing.

Yeap we've had lots of rain too. But luckily ours drains off rather quick. Nothin that stands for weeks at a time.

Still have hay down, that needs to dry out so it can be baled. And one other field that needs cut and baled, but can't get in to do it, cuz the grounds so squishy.

Too bad about your pecans.....whatcha gonna do for pecan pie at Thanksgivin and Christmas????

Sure wish we had some pecan trees. I've been wantin to plant some....but need to get rid of some of the oaks, and hickory nuts first LOL

Tons of rain so far in my part of Texas too. I am along the lower Trinity and it has all the creeks backed up big time. I got luck and was able to cut my last 10 acre hay field. The other 2 are already greening back up and we will most likely get to graze them through December as long as the weather stays mild.

Do you think the drought this summer is causing the grass to stay greener for this time of year? We usually start haying by the second week of november but we still have some really good grass left.

I just think it's the simple fact that we have had so much rain along with warm temps. Yes we are cooler now...but not cold cold.

We normally are rainy durin the winter months. But not as early as we got it this year.

There's a cowboy somewhere down around Dayton that is missing. Was rounding up cows in the low lyin areas, and water was rising. They are searchin for him as we speak. Ya'll say a prayer that he's up a tree somewhere and they find him soon. His horse showed back up at the trailer, with branches tangled in his reins.

edit:
Ok update. his horse didn't come back to the trailer. They found it tangled up in vines and branches, and had to cut the saddle off. Texas Equisearch is onsite now with horses and helicoptors aiding in the search.

Man that is terrible. I live one town over in Liberty.

Boy hate to hear that. i pray they find him. We got 28 inches of rain in october. the mississippi, red, atchfalaya, ouchita, and numerous other bayous have hit flood stages and havent crested yet. Even the guys in the northern part of the state are having problems. Our marsh is always flooded so the cows are really worried. I just hope we dont have to get airboats to pen them up. If we can get some north winds it will push the water out. My land has pretty much dried up but the bayou across the street is over its banks and into my pastures. Seen it higher before but dont want to see it get too close to the highway.

I will try to get some picture up in the next day or so. Our high speed internet is down at home and it will take a day or two to down load them with the phone line. So far we other have our creek back out and it dosen't look like it will get to the pecans trees. :D I am at the sale barn in Crockett Texas today they are looking at around 3100 hd and around 600 cows. It will be a long day today.

Let me know how the price is. I have 6 500+lb steers that I need to sell. The raywood market is low right now. 3 are black baldies, 2 reds and 1 blonde baldie.

That many head, is that way up because of the flooding? Or because people can't bale the hay they have? Or a combination? lol

It was to wet in Oct so they are making up for it.

Double L I will let you know. Tons of Packer cows sold today we are just about to starting on calves. Now it 3500 hd.

Missing Dayton cowboy's body found

By Jane Howard Lee

The Baytown Sun - Texas

Published November 10, 2009

The body of Dayton resident Gene Roberts was found Saturday, six days after the 45-year-old disappeared while helping friends herd cattle away from flood waters.

"Some of our searchers found him very near where his horse was found, which is right about where we thought we would find him," said Dayton Police Chief Pete Douzat.

Roberts and his friends were working on horseback in an area of river bottom land just east of Dayton to herd cattle there to higher ground as the Trinity River's floodwaters spilled over levees to flood low ground where the cattle grazed.

The area where the men were working was covered by two to three feet of water on Nov. 1. As some of the cattle split away from the rest and headed toward an area dense with tall brush and scrub trees, Roberts took off to head them back to the larger group. He and his horse disappeared.

Though his companions started calling for him within minutes and began to search for him shortly after, all they could find was his horse, struggling to keep its head above water in an area where the water was much deeper.

They called for help in a search that eventually included not only the Dayton Police Depart-ment, which had jurisdiction in the case, but also personnel from Liberty County law enforcement, volunteers firefighters, private citizens, Texas EquuSearch and state and federal law enforcement agencies. The searchers were on foot, in boats, on horseback and riding ATVs, in planes and in helicopters.

Those searchers received support from area churches, businesses and private citizens who provided them with everything from food and drink to portable toilets.

As the days of the search passed, the efforts to find Roberts did not flag but did turn slowly from rescue mode to a recovery mode.

Searchers speculated last week that Roberts' horse stepped off into a creek — one that is usually shallow and placid but was 10 to 12 feet deep in places due to the river flooding.

Funeral arrangements for Roberts have not been announced, Chief Douzat said.
