Ford F 150...

We were Ford people for years and years. We bought that first Dodge and
felt like traitors. But we liked it so much we got over that feeling. Then
when we bought the '06 brand new, we thought we'd try a Ford again. The
dealership we dealt with sold both Fords and Dodge. When we went into
the dealership and told the salesman what we wanted, he said he wouldn't
sell us a Ford. He said they had 10 Fords in the shop to 1 Dodge!!!
So we bought a Dodge. Now I think the Fords are better, but back then
they must have had some serious problems for him to tell us that--as
he sold them both. These have all been 1 ton dually's and when they go
out of the yard, 99% of the time they are pulling a trailer.

Sure isn't gonna be any fun buying 6 tires when the time comes!!!
Luckily the dealership put some really good tires on this pickup when we
bought it. I hope they last forever.

Speaking of which, we bought Goodyear Armours for our Yukon and so
far we have 60,000 miles on them and they aren't done yet. That's unheard
of for us, because we have 3 miles of scoria to drive on to get to the
highway.

We went from being strictly Ford, to totally Dodge! I love the way my 06 Cummins runs, pulls, and rides. I think it has every factory option available. Lisa had an 04 Dodge half ton. It road and drove great, but it only had a 4.7 Liter V8, and only got about 15mpg. We sold it, bought a 96 3/4 ton Dodge out of Texas. She drove it 40 miles, and we found out why they sold it to someone out of Nebraska! Motor was totally JUNK!!! ( I have NO use for Texicans) Anyway, we found another motor, for not to much, and its getting put in as I type. In the mean time, we bought a Chrysler 300M, as we were down to just 1 vehicle, and I don't like being afoot. You talk about a nice vehicle!!! and it gets over 28 mpg!!

It is intriguing when a cool vehicle three states away looks like a better buy than something more local.

Here is a local pickup that would be a wonderful vehicle. The ad reads: FOR SALE: Like brand new 2004 Ford F250 crew cab, 4x4, loaded w/accesories, only 3,900 miles. 402-376-1084

I know the man that owns this pickup, and he is a good guy and a straight shooter. The pickup has a gas engine, and a 6'9" box. It's hardly been used at all, and he put on several extras, including grille guard, and turn-over ball. The price is $25,000, but it's worth it.

We wanted another 3/4 ton, to pull a trailer a bit, and wanted a flatbed also, this one sounded just like what we were looking for, and for the right money. Problem was, the motor was junk. I have played mechanic enough to know what to look for, as to mileage of the vehicle, but I have never seen anyone go to this much trouble to pawn off a used vehicle, as this guy did. Oh well, as I told Lisa, if they guy can live with himself, I can too.

Here's the truck I want.

Fantastic video! Hopefully in less than a year I will be looking a buying another F550 to put on the job/road.

I had a 97 Expedition my wife wrecked almost a year ago, 5.4 Triton with 170,000 miles...damn good engine, no oil consumption and plenty of power. 2007 F250 crew cab 4x4 with the 5.4 Triton...purchased when it had 115K, now it has 138K, runs strong & no oil consumption. 2003 Lincoln Navigator, 5.4 Triton purchased at 102K..we replaced the Expedition with it, it now has 108K...strong & no oil consumption. All 3 vehicles would consistently get between 16-19 mpg on the highway, it just depended if you were bucking a wind & how heavy your foot was.

My workhorse is a 2003 F550 Super Cab 4X4 with the often cursed 6.0 'Stroke...I ordered it in December 2002 & picked it up the end of January 2003. It was the first 6.0 the dealership had gotten in. Other than dropping the turbo (warranty) and some glow plug issues (some on warranty, some on me) knock, knock, I have had no problems with the engine. I run Royal Purple synthetic 15/40 in it and have the tranny flushed with the BG process about every 36-40,000 miles. Fuel filters every fall. It has 135K on it and does everything I have ever asked it to do.

A typical day will put 100+ miles on it, generally half of which will be under a load of around 9,000 pounds on the bed. Going home empty is a plus. I have taken the tanks, pump and motor off the bed and hauled 5 tons of bagged creep feed from the feed mill to the customer (around 90 miles) and had no problems handling it. Solid front axle, 4.88 rear end, and not getting in a big rush gets the job done.

I had more tire trouble with it than anything. Ford got to replace all 6 Generals that came on it before the first 20,000 miles. They were complete junk. Right now I am running some Kumho grips all the way around on it and they handle the load & conditions just fine.

I would sure not be afraid of the new Ford built diesel they are putting in 'em now. :D

I might add that when the 550 goes out, its in rough pastures, stalk fields, lots and anywhere else cattle can be. Of the 135K on the 550, it probably has less than 50,000 on the highway. Being a hater of the DOT Nazis, it's better to take the gravel when you can.

Ford all the way but really starting to think that a dodge or chevy looks good.
Heres my timeline:
Bought a 1996 F150 with a 5.8 351, made it to 210,000 when it blew up. Pulled a 20' stock trailer all the time.

Bought a 1997 F350 Dually, 7.3 Diesel, 5 spd. Loved it, but was dumb and traded

Bought a 1999 F350 Dually, 7.3 Diesel, 6 spd., Loved it, but was dumb and traded

Bought a 2004 F350 Single wheel, 5.4 gas, auto, 130,000 motor started knocking, and 5.4 had no power to pull, traded

Bought a 2008, F350 6.4 diesel. I thought this was the pickup, even bought a brand new hydra bed and set it up just the way i want it, 25000 miles front end shaking violently, bushing and other stuff, down 1.5 weeks, 35000 high pressure oil pump and radiator, down 4 weeks, 37000 miles steering gear, ford has no replacments, waited 4 weeks still nothing, found a salvage one and paid for repairs myself. 54000 miles boom, injector failed and melted piston and put hole in block. Estimated time to fix 5 to 6 weeks, so I traded

Currently own
2005 F250 with 6.0 diesel with 137000 and 3000 engine hours, 2006 F350 6.0 diesel with 214,000 with 9100 engine hours, 1991 F250 7.3 diesel with countless miles. The only thing i can guarantee you is that the 1991 7.3 will start if the 06 and 05 wont. If the 2005 aint in the shop the 2006 is! Getting real tired of this crap either gonna buy some older 7.3's and rebuild or switch to a Dodge.

Tedious is an understatement when talking about pickups on our place, they get used and abused i aint gonna lie, but when that ole 1991 still runs like a top (hydra bed on it since day one) and these newer pickups cant stand up to anything, it just makes a guy mad. Especially when they are serviced regularly and when something is wrong i get it fixed, but it just seems never ending with these fords anymore.

Gotta agree, the older ones are better be it Ford or Dodge. From my experience a new Dodge is no treat either. Who can afford to drive these new things? I get 11 to 12 mpg with mine, and the power is depressing. I have to book an appointment at the mechanic at least once a month. Shoulda kept my 7.3, it had way better power and better mileage (chipped).
I guess in the name of lowering emissions we need to burn twice the diesel?? Makes little sense to me.

Heard of a guy that has taken all emission crap off of the new ford 6.7 diesel and is getting 25 mpg on the hiway and said that the power is like and old 7.3 powerstoke. He kissed warranty good bye by doing this but he has the cash in the bank to pay for any problems.

Nothing like spending 2K on a brand new truck just to get it to run like it should :?

after reading all this and priceing out some supposed upgrades i think i will just keep my '97 f350 7.3, 4x4 dually with about 125 thousand miles (200 thousand kilometers) took the clutch out on sunday  and was kinda looking round but there doesn't seem to be anything out there any better, new clutch kit and we're good to go

I don't know, Silver, this 2011 Dodge we have is the nicest one yet. I think
this will be our last dually though. We don't get the mileage we did with
the others though, I will say that. Mr. FH finally got an automatic transmission though, and he loves that. Pulled our RV trailer down the Big Horn Mountains and he was really pleased with how it held the trailer back.
(and he's hard to please. :P ) It sure rides the best of any so far.
He put a CW flatbed on it--has wanted one for years, so he finally got one.
It's more like a trailer-puller flatbed. He had chrome stacks on the other one but hasn't put them on this one yet. Don't know if he will.
Boys and their toys!!

For whatever reason I have always believed a diesel engine should be a inline 6 instead of a v8. My dad has a 05 duramax and has never had any problems, but I think my cummins will last longer. You never see a v8 diesel in a semi or machinery of any kind. I had heard that the 6.0 ford wasn't the best, tried to get to much power out of a smaller engine.

Cat ran lots of V8s in scrapers and such. There were lots of V8 Cat motors in trucks, back in the day, and there are lots of Perkins V8s in tractors and combines.
I think if you are in a constant pull the in-line motor will stand up better, but then again, my old 91 Ford with i a 7.3 in it lasted to 450,000, and other then dropping a valve, at 150,000, I never had it apart. The rest of the pickup kinda fell in around it.

One guy told me that the 6.0 had more trouble when they were used in situations where they idled a lot.

Since nobody can agree on this why don't we find something everyone can agree on like breeds of cattle or politics.
