GDAR Gameday 449

i personally, appreciate OT's or anyone else knowledge on topics such as this one(Bando 598). what you or i choose to do with that info, is no business of anyone else. i, like most, am trying to improve my cow herd every day. information on 598 may not concern your herd at all. but it is nice to have the "heads up" before a wreck happens. IMO

TSR, Linebreeding does not cause defects it exposes them, as for as the FCS calves I got, their linebreeding coeffeince % was less than 2% if you mate a half sister to a half brother that is 12.5% linebreed you can check any angus on the AAA sight for it's % of linebreeding. A lot of cows that look like they are all out crossed will come up 2% to 3% linebreed. About the highest % I get is 13 to 18% with a goal of atleast around 6% to 8% The highest % bull that I sold was 23% linebreed.

Another great- and quite often argued subject...Some out there (even some Vets I've heard) are blaming the current genetic problems on linebreeding or inbreeding with close matings....But I agree with you oldblood- linebreeding does not/did not "cause" the defect/mutation -- but it "exposes" it and brings it to light much earlier...

In the old days that was the way to prove defect free cattle- by linebreeding sibling to sibling- father to daughter thru enough breedings (don't remember the exact number 25-50-?)and the breed associations would consider them genetic defect free....

The old Queenie's standing up pretty good for longevity...

I saw an e-mail the other day where she was in a picture with- and had met with every US President since I think it was FDR ...

Definitely not a linebreeding expert- but I've been told that doing that sometimes with years of linebreeding will give you a fantastic hybrid vigor kick...Supposedly the reason some of the old linebred purebred herds bulls worked so well when thrown on an outcross commercial herd...
The good Queen mothers genes must have "nicked" well somewhere along the line...

I really thought that quote about linebreeding expressing genetic defects was what I said in my first sentence to Oldblood. But what I was getting at was wouldn't you get some seemingly "genetic defects" in any bloodline when intensely linebreeding? And it does seem to me that it sure is taking a long time to come up with that test for FCS.

good point. it doesn't take me much of a reason to crack a cold one. a red or red baldy calf always makes me thirsty. :D

I hope the people thinking about using Game Day or Right Answer have their semen already purchased. Both bulls could be very hard to get because of high demand.

When I started this thread I was really interested in his daughters dispositions. The one person I talked to that has some in production said they were nice and quiet and very motherly. Sitz's only had one son in their Spring sale I believe so it had me wondering a little bit.

Let's hope your cows are all homozygous black if you switch to Hereford bulls then, or that could turn into one long, hungover calving season for ya'
