The World Still Needs Cowboys and Cowgirls

In these days of quads and fenced in pastures who the heck needs a cowboy. Well we might not need as many but we could sure use some more of the values they bring.I saw some good examples of them at the High School Finals this weekend. The weather turned nasty-only a few degrees above zero with a driving rain but 120 plus kids put it all out there. Think of those 11 year old girls driving their horse into that sloppy first barrel do you think she has trouble controlling fear or meeting challenges in the rest of her life. The grade twelve bull rider who just bucked off his last chance to go to the finals-talk about a life lesson in handling failure and a further lesson in class to shake the hand of the boy who just won his spot away. All the kids who put it out in those conditions don't even have quit in their vocabulary-it's easy in today's society of sick day and stress leave abuses to raise of generation of kids that deal with challenges by taking the easy road when faced with adversity-there weren't any of them yesterday in Wood Mountain. All sports are great for kids but some teach you to reach deeper inside yourself-theres no taking a shift off in bull riding-you coast in steer wrestling and you don't win. The big thing I took away from Wood Mountain was the sheer joy that the kids had inside them to compete. The weather definitely gave them lemons but they made lemonade-a face first belly slide in the arena mud became the thing to do after a good ride or run. Our kids can teach us all some lessons if we take the time to watch and learn..

Here's my last column hope u like it.

A+, Northern...That is sure a contrast to the PC crowd that gives every kid a first place ribbon just for showing up at an event.

..totally agree............not to mention the "above and beyond good" those rodeo kids do outside the arena

Excellent commentary. I hope that means the last column you wrote and not the last column you are going to write!

Don't get me wrong but there are alot of mature well behaved kid's in every sport. As well as misfit's in all it's just pro sports pay better than pro rodeo..

The thing that irk's me is people who want their kids involved in these sports but want everyone else to "CHIP IN" money to help pay for it.I figure if you want to Play learn to pay...

The one sure thing about sports is everyone wants someone else to rub their ego's.

Interesting commments, and a round of applause for all you've done for kids in other activities also.

I hope maybe there's some meaningful, yet less obvious virtue for the kids that end up having to spend their time on tractor duty,or other jobs needing to be done as well.

Well of course there is-trust me these boys aren't all play no work either. I might drive them but they have to earn or win their way down the road. THere are tons of great kids out there whether it be rodeoing, riding a tractor, pumping gas or packing groceries. I'm a firm believer in giving kids any chance they can to try and excell at any endeavour,

Well I can attest to NR being lucky enough to drive this great bunch of boys around!!!! Our horses got out while they were at our place, the boys were out the door had the horses rounded up in a matter of minutes. They know where thier riggin bags go on the van and they do it!!!Thier hard workin boys in the chutes,Ty being very talented. The fact Tys dads willing to drive these boys hundreds of miles, sleeping under boats,in a small van in a horrible downpour, etc shows they're not there just for the fun and glory of it. They have fun buts its good humoured fun!!Great bunch of kids and Coreys a great dad,and is going to every extent he can to make all his kids AND other kids have any chance they can to shine in thier own ways!!!
