the prices for culls has realy dropped in the last two weeks i sold 7 younger cows weighing 1270 for 32.75,as long as the snow holds off and the grass holds out till dec.1 i wont be giving any more away.i'm hoping for a more positive market ln march planning to sell another 15 that will cull themselves.last march i hit $.57 /lb on 1400 #problem cows. in september they were still bringing $.42or better

You must sell some fine exotic cows miocene, these are top prices you get! We are taking the bad price now versus feeding to spring as that hasn't netted us any more money in recent years. Once you figure the feed cost I was doing it for the pleasure of their company. I'm surprised your cow prices haven't risen in the last week/ten days though they have been consistently stronger here.
Here is part of the auction mart commentary from Triple J Livestock in Westlock. I like it because they don't sugarcoat the truth.

Down, Down, Down- that's the feeder and calf market. What can you expect with a .76 cwt (delivered!!) slaughter price on finished beef?? Amazingly, the kill cow market was up 3-4 cents and the kill bulls were up a couple or more. That's all the good news, though. All weights of feeder cattle and calves were off anywhere from 3-5 cents! This really hurt. When will it all stop? When there's no cows at all left. Today we had another 600+ kill cows on offer. Lots of these are all the cows these folks had! They won't ever be back in the business. They lost lots of money and are leaving with a very sour taste in their mouth. Can you blame them?? We all know the Producer is losing his shirt in this cattle business and the Packers say they are losing money and the stores say they only handle the meat as a drawing card???!!! What are we suppose to make of this? One thing is for sure. This market is NOT supply driven. Personally, I'm beginning to reiterate what I said a long time ago. I hate the thought of single desk selling BUT........! Have a great week!

grassfarmer they were all simmental cross cows the ones i have to sell yet are all good cows that are in calf for late feb, march.so if the grass holds out .l will opt to sell any cow that does have a live calf at her side you are right that it has not made any sense to feed open cows any longer than nescesary.the group of 7 young cows i sold were all 3-5 year olds and brought 32.75 weighing 1270 ave.the comment from your auction mart is so true! i appreciate when a auction mart will tell it as it is.

Actually that's not the auction I sell at miocene, they are about 3 hours north of me and draw quite a lot of cattle out of the Peace country. I don't want an auction mart to be whining and complaining all the time but many of the rest choose to sit on the sidelines versus fighting along side producers to improve the situation. At least this outfit have the backbone to voice an opinion.

Makes me wonder who will be left here on the forum in a couple of years. We have lost a lot of good voices already. For some, I assume it's because they left the business. What became of the young guy from southern Alberta? A couple from Manitoba? TimH and Manitoba Rancher? We don't hear from Rod anymore either.

I know that if/when my cows go, I won't be here anymore. I couldn't bring myself to be anywhere near anything to do with the business.
