Doc, one of my old horses, has spent his retirement years at the neighbors teaching his boys. Five year old Haden, who was trying out his new spurs managed to get ol' Doc's attention. I got a call from his dad last week asking "when is the last time Doc bucked?" Never to my knowledge had the horse even offered to. Well, he did. Pitched Haden over the front of the saddle where he managed to get a death grip on his neck. The boy wasn't hurt and was anxious to get on and do it again, because it was "just awesome!' I'll bet we all have a story of the horse that never pitched, or the gentle bull that never acted that way before, or the dog that never bit anyone before. It makes us look with fresh eyes at the familiar. That is a good thing. Psalms 23 is a familiar, favorite passage. It is written from the perspective of a sheep. John 14 is written from the perspective of the shepherd. Sheep need care. Without a shepherd, their life expectancy is drastically reduced. The simple statement that the Lord is my Shepherd simply states that God is my keeper in every aspect of my life. He is involved in my day to day activities as well as keeping me while I sleep. Without Him, I could not make it. Whatever my need and whenever my need (they are many and varied), He has it covered. Comforting thought for the week. Have a good Sunday mornin'.
