Blue Diamond Ventures Inc., Houston, Tex., plans to build goat-processing facilities in Oklahoma and in the Central American nation of Belize, reporting it will aggressively market the world's most eaten meat and its value-added products of milk and cheese throughout the U.S., Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

"This market has been growing at an annual rate of 30 percent since 1990," said Blue Diamond Ventures chief executive officer and president John Moaning. "Our business model calls for an aggressive approach to secure those awaiting markets, and we have spent significant time building a solid infrastructure."

The U.S. currently has a net deficit of goat meat, milk, and cheese, with Australia and New Zealand as primary suppliers of the goat meat sold commercially in the U.S. There are more than 460 million goats worldwide presently producing more than 4.5 million tons of milk and 1.2 million tons of meat, mohair, cashmere, and leather.

Blue Diamond will utilize 3,000 acres in Belize and 1,200 acres in Oklahoma for a goat ranch, research center, and processing facility. Local farmers in Belize and Oklahoma, under a cooperative agreement with Blue Diamond Ventures, will raise the goats for processing at the company's facilities.

As a kid I had a milk goat and I sold the milk to a neighbor for $4.00 a gallon back then as he had an allergy to cow's milk. She was a mean goat and barely worth it.

Now when Calves get down to 70-80 bucks, it will pay to raise goats, meat goats that is.

I understand a large part of the demand is the increasing hispanic population in the US. There might be some money in it, but I'd hate to tell my neighbors I was changing my operation to a goat ranch - kind of a stigma around these parts.

We'll make this a US/Canadian org. Goat Maker should be President since he is in goat country already. Big Muddy Goatcatcher will be Vice President- Canada, Manitoba Goatman membership committee chair. DiamondGGoat Co marketing committee chair. Down here we'll get Goatweed and GoatCon101 as officers. Goatman will be our source for marketing info. LoneGoat (A.K.A. SH) will be in charge of comedic relief for our meetings and making snow-cones.

And clearly the best choice for treasurer of this league of extra-ordinary gentlemen is . . .

You fella's shouldn't be so mean. Talking that way about those up and coming goat producers!

Seriously, we happened to attend the San Antonio Stock Show in 2005, and at the time we were able to be there, the goat shows were on. Visiting with some young (comparatively! they were maybe 30+ to our upper 60's at the time) goat producers was interesting. Raising goats was possible for them to get into, where raising cattle would have been cost prohibitive. It was spoken of as a part-time job and good, character building chores for their children. Something the whole family could do to help improve life for themselves.
