OK the 4 year old filly that I bought at the auction is falling apart before my eyes :) Big surprise and you may all add an "I told you so " OK the latest thing to happen is that all of her hair is falling out!!!! And I do mean all. The only places she is not bald is her mane, tail and neck. Everything else is coming out in huge clumps  When I got her she had a huge leg wound and rain scald. I have been feeding her for two weeks on all the hay she will eat and I was giving her 5 pounds of 20% fat feed which in the past has really helped with skinny TB. I am going to switch her to COB as she is not gaining on the 20% (weird but true) She gets a cup of canola and hoffmans added to the mix. I wormed her with Ivomectin last night, in case the first dose didnt catch everything. The vet is coming out to look at her leg in a couple day but I would love ideas on this hair deal! Mange? Lice? I have never seen either but it is not ringworm and rain scald does not make horse go bald... Is it that she is adjusting to her new diet?

Stop mixing Nair into the water you bath her with Judith, that might help  Maybe replace it with Rogaine...  Have you only had her for two weeks? I would wonder if the stress that she was going through basically caused this (It can happen with other species that I am aware of) and that as she recovers well, it will recover but as we all know, I know squat about horses...

Good luck, let us know what the vet says.

Yup, I just picked her up at auction. A true diamond in the rough. Great pedigree, nice conformation but basically a mess. That is cosmetic so we should get her healthy soon enough. I have just never had a horse loose so much hair so darned fast. I had picked all of the rain rot off and the hair is growing in nicely on her back and then wham I brushed her last night and I had a lovely chestnut carpet at my feet and a bald horse!!!! ( the new hair on her back is not falling out so I have no idea what the heck, stupid mules :D

Judith:

I'm a long way from being a vet...so this could well be worth what it costs!

Could she have had a high grade fever for an extended period of time? Fevers can cause critters to lose their coats (hair and wool.) It also could be parasitic too.

My initial thought was selenium toxicity or deficiency...but that usually shows in the tail, mane, and hooves.

Hope you get her straightened out!

Cheers---

TTB

it is very possible she had a fever at some point. The farrier who came out ( I can do trims but man I had to call a pro for those feet) said she had fever rings. I've never heard of a fever ring but I'm told she has them :)

I bought a horse once from a guy who had abused him. I didn't need the horse but WAS NOT gonna let him abuse the critter anymore. Anyhoo..after I got him home and settled in and all looked to be on the mend all of his hair fell out also.

Vet told me it was prob something akin to post traumatic syndrome and just to keep on the regime I was on . I did and lo and behold after the hair fell out and he looked like HUGE rat....it all slowly began to come back and was like glass from then on.

I'm leaning toward Kolas explanation. When we bought the morgan mare, she automatically became queen of the herd...our daughters gelding was bothered by this{she could be agressive}...his hair started to fall out, alot like yours is doing Ju Jube. Vet said it was stress caused by Queen Morgan. His hair grew back now these two horses are insepartable

So what you are saying Mrs. Greg is that I am being too dominant for this mare ?:D ( smart bum gene couldnt resist , Really I just dont have any control over it :)

Seriously I have never had a horse lose all its hair at one time, kind of freaky.

On a hugely positive note all the breeding is done for the year. Everyone is safely if foal and we only have two really late babies that could be born any minute. I have never had foals so late in the year.

Sigh....What I was saying young lady is.....How would you feel if you were a well bred gal,and some crazy norhovian bought you for ONLY $25,THEN moved you to{shiver} VANCOUVER....would you not be stressed out a tad?????????????My hairs just falling out thinking about that poor horses new circumstances....{talking to self..."yup you set yourself up for a Judy comeback when ya mentioned hair falling out,now smile sweetly and Jawana may not notice} :) :-)

Judith,
two of our horses are doin this exact same thang, they've been on the place for 5 or more years. Never done it like this before, but both of them are prone to rain scald moreso than any of our other horses. Don't know why, they are on good mineral, and feed. So...who knows. They've both been wormed regularly, and just since it's warmed up and they started sheadin out "normal" or so I thought, when I started brushing them....more and more hair came out. neck, withers, and butt all almost naked of hair. You can see new hair growin back now. I asked a neighbor about it, and she said she's had horses do that too, and never could find out why. These two were wormed a couple weeks ago, and will get it again tomorrow, just in case there's somethin that the first dose(safeguard) didnt get.

:???:

I'm going to toss some MTG on her. Won't hurt at the very least . Then when my Vet comes out I will get him to do a scrape, see if he can find anything. Geeze ya buy these expensive horse you would think they could keep the coat on :) :P

I had a yearling colt get a puncture wound, then later the hair started coming out in clumps. I called the vet and they said to give it a round of antibotics that a virus got through from the wound. Worked like a charm and all the hair started growing back in after a couple weeks.

Hi,
She is currently on Duplocillin (sp) for her ankle . What type of antibiotic did they suggest for your colt. The Duplocillin seems to be bothering her stomach. I wont mess around with it for now as the vet will be coming out. This is very interesting though. I never thought of photosensitivity, wouldnt she have some type of weird skin if that was it? She has no skin issues in the areas at all, it looks health, just bald

Photosensitivity usually happens on their nose first..if they are really light skinned. It's bumpy and rough, almost like warts or somethin on their nose.
Like Judith said...the hair came out...the skin underneath looks healthy as all git out, nothin at all on it. Both of ours the skin is dark, they are bay's, and it's just as perdy and shiny skin as you'd ever wanna see, no flaking nothin, just bald. Or ....almost bald, ours are regrowin hair already.
Photosensitivity in cattle is caused by eating a weed (goatweed, some call it pigweed here) which in turn gets into their system, and then thier liver produces a toxin, then that toxin affects their skin. We had two calves last year with that.....boy it was fun to treat. Easy to treat after we finally figured out what was wrong with them. Two doses of LA200 about 3 days apart and they were over it and doin great.

Long ago,one of my rideing buddies had a mare that would go bald every spring-no reason-all the hair on neck and sholders gone..would grow back in two weeks... Also had a cat that had a high feaver for bout a week, lost all her hair..She also grew it back, but took her longer..
