I rent a farm from a guy in town. now the guy says he is making too much money and needs to bury some cash or lose it to Uncle Sam. He wants to go 60 40 on the 20 cows that it would take to fill the pasture. I would do all the labor and wintering. to me, it seems like I am taking it in the arse. I do not like to "partner up" I want to be left free to do as i please

any ideas on how to fairly do this ?
sounds like if I want to keep renting the farm I am gonna have to do it one way or the other...

I've had share cattle in the past, they don't make money for either side unless, as in your case, the owner has a tax problem. See if he will finance the cows to you at no or low int. That way he has spent the money and will take five years to get it back in payments.

We all have to work together to make the world go round Jigs, a favour to one may mean a favour to you. Just make sure you get everything in writing.

Have him sink his extra money into farm improvements which he can then write off - fences, roads, water supply, repairs etc - lowering his taxable income. The improvements will increase the value of the property which he will appreciate if he ever sells the property down the road.

bottom line, share cattle won't make you any money, you'll be dam lucky if you don't lose some. but when land is involved in the deal that you want to get/keep tied up, sometims ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

you'd be better off buying them if you can keep the land tied up. been offered 75/25 and he provides the cashola for the bulls, replaces the dries. I rent his grass and run em like they were mine other wise. maybe see if he'd give some on his end and a couple years into it he'll go more your way. I know a guy in chinook that gave one of his neighbors his cows to take them off his hands. the owner gets one finished beef a year and the pick of the heifer crop - but the leasee (if you can call him that) has to retain so many females a year to keep the herd young and not just play them out. the guy that got the cows thinks he will just take them right back when things turn around.

what kind of cows are they?

i had a cattle/land contract back in the 80's.he provided the land and cattle and i provided the machines and labor.i received 1/4 of the calf crop over the scales.he had depreciation and cost on the land and cattle and i on my machinery.ALL hay was put up on a 50/50 basis and either could buy the others share as needed.remember,,,this was back in the 80's.are there any other offers to consider or negociate?

Somebody posted about him buying the cows out right and selling them to you over a five year period with good terms. Why wouldn't that work. You get the calves and make a payment on the herd. . Maybe you would have to put in replacements but you would also get the culls. :?

OOOOOORRRRRRR......Jiggsy could either pimp himself out and buy the farm outright within a matter of weeks! (Those lucky ladies from North Central Kansas!) 8) Of course he would have to deal with wearing a back brace and a truss for the rest of his natural life........

Or offer his services as a tackling dummy for the Huskers (provided he wears his purple Mildcat t-shirt at all times) and pay for the farm in less than one week!

Maybe Kola would go partners with him??

Kola is the land lord!!

careful there sherriff loomix, this guy may want sweet huney Dawn to feed them Aurora coop liquid.....

I know.....3+ pounds/day consumption of Aurora's colored water is way cheaper than a pound of Loomix. My competitor to the west advertises that his stuff has less water in it than mine. Funny, his stuff will freeze around 0F and mine will still flow and pump at -40F.

I guess I'll just have to be content knowing that Loomix has been proudly burning the throats of cattle since 1952. Sigh....

:agree: He pays for the raw materials and you supply the manpower. Win-win over the long-term.
