How do you greet a woman/lady?

Interesting conversation going on thru Kit Pharos newsletter....
Apparently some woman was upset because a greeter at some event was greeting all the women by attempting to shake their hand- which upset someone that complained....

So- the question is- what is the correct etiquette when a man greets/meets a woman he is being introduced to?

I was brought up that usually I nod- or tip my hat (which is on my head 95% of the time) and acknowledge her by saying "Ma'am" - and only take or shake her hand if she offers it....

One of the lady posters suggested taking her hand by both hands then-- so that she knows where his hands are  :P

I think that is the correct way to do it, at least that is what our teachers told us.

It was prob an older lady and she was startled and prob had her hand shaken firmly which in most cases hurt. Too often men dont realize how hard they shake hands.
Yes yall are right you wait untill the lady offers her hand then you only lightly grasp the fingers not the whole hand. Younger women will prob give a full hand shake. BUT still in a social gathering only lightly grasp her hand guys................

Two hands, gentle and kiss if offered. Heck hug if offered. Always remember to address her in some fashion because just addressing the husband is plain bad form.

The title of this fred is "How do you great a woman/lady?"

I guess we all assumed it was meant "How do you greet a woman/lady?"

Maybe it was meant "How do you grate on a woman/lady?" That is pretty easy for me to do. Often when I greet anyone, it is easy to grate on them even if I think they are great.

Have a great day, greet everyone, and try not to grate. :-)

FIXED  I spent a long day at the Clinic yesterday- and my eyes/mind were not functioning well...

I think you got it right oldtimer. I don't get offended easily though so any of those greetings would work for me. I definetly probably prefer the hat tip and such it is a little more classy:) Oh and Big Muddy Rancher like I said I don't get offended easily, but if you patted my behind you may get one back :D

It all depends on where you meet, and the event you are at I would say.
