how much ????????

Another solution is one that is not overly palatable - but sell them all out.

First loss is sometimes your best loss. Remember that and remember it well.

You can always buy back when the time comes - and yes I know what you put into them.

But the pencil and calculator never lie.

Looking forward - how long are you willing to carry them at a loss - and what is your return to even time? Years?

Cowboyup - Is that why you wear a mask in your avatar :???:    Eight cent/lb hay will not fly with recent economics of cows, the cows will be sold first. Guys couldn't make money on 4c/lb hay last year why would they spent 8c now? There is a shortage of hay but there is plenty other forms of roughage available at more reasonable prices - indeed I think the volume of salvaged crops about to hit the market will actually make for a good cattle market late in the year.
I am in southwestern montana and the freight is what makes it so high. I am trying to find a way to sell my hay so I can survive another year. $160 dollars is still cheaper than $230 and sometimes with the cows you just have to make it through also until the market changes. The cowman didn't feel too bad when they would only pay 45 a ton and calves were a buck and a quarter. I am only asking 70 a ton in the stack.

Thanks everyone. We are looking into alternative feed right now. Silage is an option and we can borrow our friends silage trucks and just pay for fuel ( he has a chopping company).

As far as frozen crops , looks like they are going to get them off around here, we are heading into the high 20's for the end of the week. I am thinking there should be some green feed or silage around. I have a lead on green feed for around 90 a ton.

My cows will be going but I would like to keep the best ones if I can, especially the ones that we AI'd last April. It would be a real shame for them to go to slaughter.

NR, how do you get your feed? Seems to me you've said but I can't remember if you have it put up on your own place on shares or if you buy it.

Cowboy up how are you doin/ make sure you get Ty out on yote patrol-wish you were closer I'd take a few hundred ton.
Doing good NR knockin second cutting down like crazy. Had a hot wind on saturday and a hard frost in the morning and the alfalfa is wilting fast. Hope you are making it through your ordeal with flying colors. Ty will probably have alittle more time when rodeo slows down. then he can whittle on the numbers and make some eatin money. Pretty hard to move hay around here right now
