Here's what I been up to lately. Between brandings, fencing and other stuff, I haven't got to work on this one very often. Finally got the seat tooled the last two days. This one is special cuz it's MINE! :D

The seat piece. I still have to tool the part where my butt goes.

Stirrup leather with Nevada twist.

Tapadero. I will use these in spring, winter and fall. I have a pair of 4 inch Monel stirrups to use the rest of the time.

Here's the back of the cantle.

Here's the rear jocky.

I can hardley wait to get this on a horse and get to use it. :)

If that's what happens when you ruin leather, I would love to see how it looks when you do a good job!!!

Looks very nice.

Awesome, Jinglebob!!!

The carving looks super, but are you happy with it?
I know you have been going to Buffalo to learn the finer things
on the flower tooling. Looks like you were a quick study!!!

What is that horn called, and why is is shaped the way it is?
I've seen them before and I think only on Wade trees so I
am curious as to why it is a different style.

Oh, there is still a long ways to go before I'll be totally happy with any carving I do, but for now, yeah, I'm kind of pleased. My lines are still a little irregular and I just need to keep practicing.

I ordered it with a 5 inch horn cap, but when I saw how big it was going to end up, I cut it down. It's probably about 5 inches now, finished. I wanted a bit more tip to the top, more like a Guadalajara, but it was a little flatter. The bigger the horn, the more mulehide horn wrap you can put on and keep it on, handy. Also, if one ever comes over on top of you, a bigger horn cap is less apt the crush you or gouge you.

We had a girl down south of us, a few years ago, who was ridng colts and using her old barrel saddle. Got into a wreck and the horse came over the top onto her and stuck that pretty little barrelracing horn, into her thigh! She made it, but I hear she has a pretty nasty scar.

Them bigger horns are nice to lean on too!

That's gonna be one good lookin saddle, toolin looks good to me...........good luck
PS The bigger the horn...........tha better tha saddle ? :D

Thanks Haymaker and all others!

I don't know about that horn comment. I like a bigger horn, but what ever anyone wants , you know, some guys just ain't used to dealing with something that big.

Oh Jinglebob, that isn't so special. The tooled look was always there, you just removed some leather to make it appear.

No, that looks extremely nice to me, and you should be proud of the talents you have attained. Kudos.

I would post something that I am good at, but I haven't found out yet what it is. :???: :-) Maybe I could post a picture of me complimenting you on your talents. 8) :D

I like the look of the Tap's too, and have you rode a saddle with stirrup leathers in that style before? Can they pinch? You see a lot of them anymore.

I've tried them before and didn't like them, but they weren't built right. I always tried to make a 360 degree turn and realized that they should just be a 180 degree turn. The beauty of it is, if I don't like them, I just cut them off and do a regular turn. I wouldn't advise it, except for the taps, as they tend to want to turn towards the horse. I'll let you know how they turn out.

No pun intended.

I don't think they will pinch, but the ones before, just left a lot of bulk and a bulge at the front part of my ankel. Kind of like riding ox bows. These have 4 inch bell stirrups with a block in the tread, so they will be further from my ankle. I hope they work.

OK- JB.But you'll have to wait 'till your next life. :D :D :D

Almost a shame to sit on it JingleBob. You'll cover up most of that pretty carving. Of course you could ride side-saddle.

I thought the horn must have something to do with the mulehide horn
wrap, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I have
always wondered.

Long time ago in Sheridan, Wyoming right in front of the grandstand, a horse reared over with a girl and the horn crushed her chest and killed
her.

I have always loved tooled leather, bought tooled leather purses etc. in Argentina and Spain on past trips.

I'd loved to learn to do this. Do you have to follow a pattern or is it freehand?

I have done wood prints where you have to carve a wood block to make the design. My mom's "artistic" and when we were kids we did all sorts of arts and crafts.

I draw a pattern for the flowers on paper and then transfer it to the leather. As I get better at it, I will draw it on the leather and if I get real good, I will frehand it with the swivel knife, right on to the leather.

The basket stamping is done somewhat free hand. You start with a straight line and then just go from there.

Nope, the carving is what helps to hold your butt. Thats one of the reasons to do it.

Side saddle. Right. :x

If you was to bring a bunch of that rain up here, I'm sure I could get the neighbors to pitch in and we'd get you a brand new saddle. Just deliver the goods and place an order. We'll swap in this country.
