....I'm going to open my own meat market! :D

I don't know why but for about as long as I can recall I've wanted to not only produce my own meat but to sell it direct to the public as well.

This past week I did a handshake deal with a local Chinese family who is constructing a new supermarket in the pueblo near the ranch. The plan is to open my own meat market within their store.

We've discussed the idea for several months now but they first wanted to get a feel for how much space they'd have available. Their new store is now far enough along that they've agreed to the deal and have laid out the area where I'll set up.

The Chinese own most of the "local" supermarkets here in Venezuela but rarely operate a meat market within the store. They do usually have a section that sells packaged meats (hams, etc) and also cheese and egg products. They rarely venture into beef, pork, and chicken sales. Those products are usually sold in separate shops. I'll be offering both the raw products (beef, pork, chicken, eggs, and ranch-made cheese) as well as pre-packaged hams and cheese. My area will occupy a space of approximately 12 feet X 35 feet and will be located at the back of the store (which is where customers typically look for meat products) and will be visible down the main aisle as you enter the store.

A buddy of mine has a very tiny shop directly across from where the Chinese are building their new place and he told me today he sold 3 animals in the last two days. This little pueblo moves an amazing amount of meat from what I've seen. I hope to do my part.

Wish me luck. I'm pumped. :D

Good for you! I wish you much success and hope you have a great time doing it :)

My mom and dad met and got married in Venezula.

vertical integration, every ceo's dream, may it be every thing you hope for good luck

Interesting that you used that term HG. When I first kicked off the place down here I told my guys that we needed to do just that....integrate vertically.

We had some tough, dry years trying to achieve the goal (and still haven't reached it fully) though I've seen what we've done so far bearing fruit. Right now we can irrigate our bermuda every day because we've got water in our ponds....ponds that most ranchers here don't build. We've got sorghum ready to harvest that we planted with that same pond water. We've put up almost 30,000 kilos of sorghum for both hog and cattle feed so we don't have to leave the place in search of feed like we did in years past. For this year's rains we'll have an in-ground silo ready to protect excess grass production.

And the direct meat sales will be one more way to maximize the profits from what we produce in-house. Like I said, I'm pumped. :D
