I'm sick of BSE. All we do is talk about it. Fight over it. And make all our neighbors and friends mad over it. It's effected my pocket book because all the bad new hits when I'm ready to market. It's caused our packing industry to move out and lay off workers. It's cost us all our export markets and put our country into a huge trade deficit. It's made me look bad in the eyes of my fellow citizens. According to science it is not a serious problem like all the other killer diseases we have had to cope with. Yet even if I don't have it, it has destroyed my brain. It's all I can think about. It's depressing to try and manage your operation when you are always getting bombarded with bad news and when you are being hounded by bad news. So I refuse to discuss the issue, think about it, or even worry about it anymore. Hopefully science will someday come up with something meaningful but i ain't gonna loose any more sleep over it. If worse comes to worse I'll move to Canada or some place far away and start a chicken ranch.

Err, I wouldn't load up the stock trailer with yer stuff quite yet. Up here north of the social medicine line chicken ranching (not the Nevada kind) is supply managed. The government tells you how many broilers you can grow. But if you want to get into the elk business, we've got as whole lotta good old boys up here who will let you in on a goooood deal.

What bad news? America's organization for the Cattleman is saying everything is great! Might just be that the American Rancher has to get on their case and tell them that everything is not great! But I guess the 18,000 members are right! Is that the majority?

Although I am sure it has caused you some stress the last month or so it is not even close to what we have endured in Canada for over 2 years. Pick up a paper or turn on the radio and there are the folks at R-Calf with yet another lie about Canadian producers.

Some producers have not survived and many more will be gone once the cow market strengthens somewhat. There will be the same or more cows in Canada with fewer owners who are leaner and meaner.

This whole issue of BSE and what is the right thing to do has fallen into the hands of a Government that knows little or nothing about prion disease. I wonder what tomorrow will bring? England is still averaging 500 + per year in new cases of BSE and they think it is going to end soon. But then they thought that last year also. For all the sceptics, our test is viewable at SEBM online [May 2005]. Some may find it enlightening.

A note to Neil Waugh,: Are you still writing for the Sun Neil? If so, do I have a story for you regarding a "Live Animal Test" for CWD. Ron.

18,000 is one number I've seen as the number of cattle producers in the state of SD. That, or up to maybe 22,000. Depends on who is talking, I guess. Of course the number of cattle producers in SD are actually producing cattle........who knows how many of the R-CALF "members" actually are owners of cattle, though of course, only cattle producers may vote in the organization. What was the number voting in their last convention? Think it was less than 1,000. Not that any of this means anything. Just idle thoughts.

Well join the club cedardell and welcome to the last two years of Canadian hell. Yes it is hard to concentrate on anything else when you have a Beef organization doing every thing in their power, including lieing and cozying up to Anti beef groups, to destroy you. And everytime you read a newspaper or hear the farm report or get together with friend you are reminded of their attempts. Then it also doesn't help when outsiders make accusations about your product with no proof to back their statements up. It all gets to you after a while but all we can hope and pray for is by the end of July this will be over and we can start trading like the friends we once were and I hope will be again. But if this drags on we will be competeing and it is a DOG EAT DOG world out there and after all of what Canada has been put through by some in the US I doubt we will be careful about whos toes we step on to survive. :x In the mean time Keep your Head up and pray the truth out weights the lies in July. If not Welcome to Canada.

If your govt. tells you how many broilers you can raise, do they also tell you how many cattle, hogs and other species you can raise? I don't understand Canadian form of Socialism. It seems like it would not be easy for one to get started in livestock business unless of course you were a US business conglomerate that convinced your govt. that you we're all going to profit by letting them manage and control business for you. I was just reading in our Farm Bureau paper how Cargill has bought into South American ethanol plants and is ready to bombard our own Farmer owned interests with a lot of imported ethanol made from sugar. No wonder they are pushing CAFTA. Soon Canadian govt. will not control policy anymore, Cargill will. I'll bet you they'll tax you for the privilege too. I could start my chicken ranch on a deserted island somewhere where I could call the shots, but I'd have to start "Deserted Island Free Trade Organization" in order to market them. And I suppose Cargill would be the only one that could haul them and market them. I kind of understand now why the Chinese wanted control of the Suez Canal. They really ween't dealing with the US Govt., they were dealing with Cargill. I guess they figured it was the only way to get a fair deal.

Cedardell, it is not Government that tells you how many you can produce.

With supply managed products, marketing boards determine the demand and set quota levels. You are then free to buy whatever amount of quota you can afford.

I'm not aware what the price for chicken quota is right now. But there are lots of Dairy farmers selling thier dairy quota and buying chicken quota!

Chicken quotas are not cheap. Our neighbour sold his and retired on it, without ever having to sell any land or machinery, just the quota. However, once a year there is a draw for free quota in Manitoba. Anyone interested submits their name, and with any luck they are in.

The way the supply management works is that those who are under it are told by their marketing boards how much they can produce of their product.

That doesn't sound like much fun, but unlike the contract farmers in your country these people actually own the livestock, they do not raise it for someone else. They are also paid a price based on how the marketing board has negotiated the sales of the product. The marketing board, which is producer controlled, is basically a monopoly, and therefore can control the sale price much better than individuals. They are also controlled in that they cannot just raise prices indiscriminately, they have to apply for raises. In other words, they have to prove an increase in operating costs in order to justify a raise in the price of milk.

You don't get the windfall profits we (used to  ) occasionally see in the beef business, but you don't get the disasters either. The result is a bunch of independent family owned farms who have some stability built into their operations, and who are protected from the type of pirates we live with every day. This is absolutely infuriating to the same pirates who would love to march in here and throw marketing boards out the window so they can rape and plunder the small chicken and dairy farmers the way they do beef and grain producers.

Right now, are there any independent chicken farmers in the United States? Or are they all serfs working for Tyson? If I was going to give up my independence, I'd much rather sign on with a bunch of people on my own end of the food chain, than become an employee of Cargill or Tyson. 8)

Isn't that horrible? These people have lived through this before with the IRA, and now it's happening again. :(

If the terrorists think they are going to intimidate these people, I think they are in for a surprise. They don't intimidate easily.
