During our 4 day power outage the folks up the road put those candles in a little bucket inside their watering bowls. They didn't have power to pump water but they didn't freeze up inside and were ready to work when the power came on.

We have a gravity system so if we hadn't had a generator it probably would have worked for us.

Dad and Uncle Leigh, in the early 30s, drove the 20 miles to town one frosty day in Uncle's Model A. That was before car heaters and defrosters. They had made several stops to clear ice off the windshield so they could see where they were going until they saw a traveling salesman with a candle fastened on his dash and a smug look on his face. It didn't take long for Uncle Leigh to fix a candle on his Model A and Dad to have one on our Whippet!
