Calving season is upon us! First calves out of heifers came officially August 19, 2008. Here are some pics of mommas and babies :D :D

Every one of these mommas, had their calf, got up and licked them off and got them suckin'. Went to tag 'em this afternoon, nice tempered mommas :D :D :D

That brings up some curiosity questions. Is there any difficulty when it gets 30 or 40 below with lactating cows? Are you out on winter range with no bedding etc. or are they close to home being fed and bedded?

I know guy's here that do it and good clean water close to where they are will add a 100#s by spring. If the cow's need to travel a way's for water they don't drink enough in the -30 to -40 degree weather one guy feeds top quality baleage the other feeds good grass hay and creep feeds with oats. They weigh around 700#s by mid may.
