I just heard on Ag Day this morning that Japan was reconsidering taking our beef due to the fact of the border opening with Canada.

When Creekstone petitioned the USDA for test kits they included a request for opening the border to Canadian cattle under 30 months. A year ago!

My post wasn't clear, I don't think. Japan was not going to take our beef if we opened the border.

Is this more fearmongering? All the negotiating that has been done was on the age of the animal not where it came from and Japan has been in Canada too so why would they just now put a stipulation on about if the border opened?

I may be wrong, but I think what feeder is saying is that our actions with Canada will have no effect on how Japan treats us, contrary to what certain folks have been saying.

I can't say if it is fear mongering. I'm just stating what I heard on the TV. Where they got their info from I do not know.

I also heard the Ag. Sec'y say that Japan didn't consider us, the US, part of the North American Beef Industry. That they do consider us separate from one another.

South Korea won't reopen market any time soon

A senior South Korean agriculture official said that Seoul has no intention of rushing to reopen its borders to American beef.

Following a consultation with American trade officials, Kim Chang-seob, director of the Animal Health division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, said that Seoul will demand inspection of U.S. farms and processing plants by not only government officials and technical experts, but by civic groups as well.

It has been widely believed that South Korea would follow Japan's lead, but Kim said that full-fledged bilateral talks will require more time than required by Japan and that the "nature of the consultative talks preclude a date for the opening of the market to U.S. beef."

Kim also said that while Japan has 15 cases of BSE in its herd to date, South Korea has none. "South Korean experts stressed at the meeting that the most important consideration in lifting the ban is concern over the safety for consumers," Kim said, according to a report from the Yonhap news agency.

The two sides will meet again in late March, Kim said.

Sandhusker, I may be wrong but I think what faster horses is saying is that Japan recognizes the Canadian border opening as a step towards trusting that our processing facilities can assure our consumers of safe beef as well as Japan with SRM removal.

USDA Chief: Japanese Concerns Could Delay Beef Trade Start

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones) - U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns warned lawmakers Tuesday in written testimony that new queries from Japan and that country's "plodding regulatory process" could cause additional delays in resuming beef trade between the two countries.

Johanns addressed the House agriculture committee with his testimony.

Japan's new questions arose from the country's doubts over the beef grading system the USDA is proposing to prove that the beef it will ship comes from cattle under a certain age limit.

Japan banned all U.S. beef in December 2003 after a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad-cow disease, was discovered in a Washington state dairy cow.

In addition to pursuing the Japanese market, the USDA is working on re-establishing most export markets that closed after the disease was found.

"While we are focusing on Japan because of our important trading relationship and its leadership role in the region, we are also pursuing efforts to reopen all the markets that have been closed to us. We are actively engaged with Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Egypt and Russia and have specific actions under way in each market to get trade resumed," he said.

Same old ~SH~...Still mixing his Viagra with his Ex-lax..........

rancher- feeder may have been right about the Japs tho- rumor is flying around from up on the hill that the Japanese have now used the Canadian beef imports as a way to hold up opening up exports.....Questioning the safety of our opening of the border to Canadian imports.... Ag Secretary would not admit to it, but says there are "new problem developments."

Japan's playing politics, I wonder what they want for there financial contribution to the war in Iraq? Food safety is far from anybody's mind in this whole thing! It's been said before and it will be said again. there is no difference in the way Japan is treating this and the way R-calf is. they both have alterior motives. Someone correct my spelling please! That seems to be of importance here too the odd time!
