Johanns is in Disneyland........
He sold out to private industry pressure..........................so why would you keep data in a private database when the Gov is going to have the "Mother House"???? WHAT IF.......you take a calf to the livestock market, with a RFID tag, they read the tag ( if the number on the outside matched the chip???) and the market reports it to???????????????? (A) private data warehouse of their choosing. (B) A state vets office. (C) A National USDA Database.

After all this listening session.................we still do not have a clue ON THIS ISSUE!
SO...............if you have a diseased dead animal RFID tagged on the floor......the Gov is going to e-mail the 100+ datawarehouses and say.....who has 176768765654342 ???????????????? OR will the Gov be plugged into all these databases????? Talk about Government access to PRIVATE DATA???? You can't have it both ways folks!!1

USDA's four guiding principles for the NAIS are as follows:

The system must be able to allow tracking of animals from point of origin to processing within 48 hours without unnecessary burden to producers and other stakeholders.

The system's architecture must be developed without unduly increasing the size and role of government.

The system must be flexible enough to utilize existing technologies and incorporate new identification technologies as they are developed.

Animal movement data should be maintained in a private system that can be readily accessed when necessary by state and federal animal health authorities.

NCBA Statement On USDA's Announcement Regarding Animal Identification

"Producer-members of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) are pleased that Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns has announced the department's support of a government/private partnership toward implementation of a National Animal Identification System (NAIS). The Secretary says this approach will enable the private sector to maintain animal movement data and better protect the confidentiality of producer information.

"For some time now, NCBA has led the effort to put in place a private-sector, multi-species ID program for livestock. NCBA believes protection of producers' rights and confidentiality is a top priority, and the industry is best equipped to do this. Under this private-sector system, animal health authorities will be able to receive information for appropriate animal health concerns, but the data will remain the property of the individual and managed by a non-profit multi-species consortium to maintain confidentiality.

"NCBA is certainly on the same page with USDA in terms of the guiding principles for the animal ID program. Secretary Johanns' call for 48-hour traceback capability and the flexibility to accommodate developing technologies are very consistent with the goals NCBA's producer-led Animal ID Commission has established. And we especially appreciate his commitment to minimizing the size and role of the government in implementing the identification system.

"We applaud the ongoing commitment of the USDA and APHIS to the animal health system in this country and the public/private partnership that enables American producers to supply the most abundant and safest food supply in the world. We look forward to working with USDA officials and leaders across all livestock sectors as part of a comprehensive, multi-species consortium. "

NCBA and USDA are sleeping together............YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! Explain to me what is so CONFIDENTIAL about an animals path of travel?????? A food animal goes from ranch A--- to Sale Barn B---TO Feed Lot C-----to Packer D . The real issue and challenge is tracking Equine.............the cattle deal is relatively easy compared to that. NCBA and their dream of a data warehouse is not a good idea AND alot of folks are not happy with it. I do not care what folks say at NCBA.......a lot of people and I do not mean R-Calfers, are really upset about NCBA's entry into this data warehouse deal.
