They've shown his dad a time or two.....and they always say, "If he shows his dad that he can handle the ranch, it will someday be his" But I agree.....Hughes and Sons.....hmmm? Maybe the other son/s didn't want the ranch life? When he and his lil one were puttin out salt tubs...he said that he wanted his son (the baby) to have the option of comin back and workin the ranch when he was grown.
 
There is another son....named Ryan. Don't know where he is....

Heck, you folks are speculating a lot about people you only know through the television set. Last I checked that's not the best place to get all of your facts.

Ryan Hughes works for Stevenson Genetics at Lewistown. A good and knowledgeable fellow.

I was surprised that it appeared the only antibiotic that was changed
at the Galt ranch was different scour pills. Scouring calves are already
dehydrated. We found out a long time ago that dehydrated calves
don't have much ability to dissolve a hard pill.

Also, the nephew saying about a calf that is too weak to stand, "the
best place for him is out here with his mother." :shock: That's horse
pucky when they are that far gone.

We've been through the scour deal years ago for 8 years running.
Sometimes you have to get the calf in and give him electrolytes and
no milk for a period of time and then milk out the cow so the calf
doesn't get a big charge of milk and start the whole thing all over
again. We gave scour medicine in liquid form, not pills. JL is
exactly right when she said they should have found out what scour
bug they were dealing with. Just take a culture to the vet and he'll
find it out.

I don't think the Galt Ranch portrays a realistic picture of ranching.

Cal roped in the roping club
we belonged to, so we saw them fairly regularly. One of Earl and Glenna's
daughters is Sharon Edsell and she trains dogs. She's fairly well known
in Montana and the Border Collie circles.
 
Nope that's why I googled. No where in the show has it said that the Hughes Ranch is also a hunting ranch. Nothing wrong with that. But I think if your gonna do a show like this..put all the facts on the table. Don't leave major info out.
How many times has the narrator said, "Ranchers get just one big paycheck a year"....well...on the Hughes ranch...if he's rentin out the "Lodge" that's shown on his website...to hunters...who pay...then that calf crop is not his only source of income. It makes me no difference how he makes his living. Or where his other brother is. But it would be interesting facts for the show if they'd just go ahead and tell it like it really is. I'm not saying anything bad about the other brother Ryan. Not at all.
I think this is an awesome show. Showing the world how hard ranchers work to produce the beef that feeds this country. It shows three families that do things differently. Kinda like here on ranchers. We are all in the same business.....yet we all do things differently. None of it's wrong...you do what you hafta do to make a livin.
 
Whoa High Plains! Don't get yer dander up. I don't think anybody was saying anything bad about the "other son." We were simply commenting that it says "sons" on the ranch sign. that naturally leads to questions. I'm sure Ryan Hughes is a fine, hard working man. And, of course, he's obviously got loyal friends, which says a lot about him.

Now I will say that when these families agreed to be on national television, they also agreed to having people comment on their operations. If they didn't think people were going to discuss the show they were just being naïve. And I'm surer none of them can be accused of that.
 
There is a book published a few years ago written by a guy by the name of David McCumber, that chronicles his years worth of experience on the Galt ranch starting out as a greenhorn. The name of the book is ''The Cowboy Way: Seasons on a Montana Ranch'' If you like the show you probably will like the book.
 
It's a 4 part series...with the last of the 4 comin on tomorrow night. But.....I did read that if the response is good...Animal Planet might make it a regular series. That would be cool. At least somethin decent to watch on TV.
 
Yeap I bout had a fit myself. Then I went thru the guide on the Direct TV.....to next monday...and it shows it listed to come on then. July 5th. Don't know why it skipped a week.....don't remember them sayin it was gonna do that last week.
 
Was this show filmed this past March of 2010? Anyone know? I don't recall my folks talking about a late spring blizzard like they went through...but maybe it didn't reach the Dakotas or wasn't as bad there.

Also I can't get that image of ole Glenna Stucky out waving her pistola around searching for that skunk! My kind of gal....reminds me of my Mother.
 
Last American Cowboys was on again tonight, with another segment
coming next Monday night.

We wondered if anyone else caught the fact that the Galt ranch
cattle drive, the cows didn't have any calves???? Things just weren't right
for spring, so it's our thought that the filming was done in the late
fall after the calves were weaned and then they just SAID they
were turning them out in the spring. Either that, or they lost a lot
of calves with the scours. :???: I also wondered how they were
going to trail 3000 cows and calves 40 miles in 2 days. :shock:

The Stuckys sure ride nice horses, don't they?


Seems like the Galt Ranch owner is a pretty good guy and laid back, but it bothers me that he has that helicopter.

And why did Scott Hughes have to sort out a lead cow...when they
were just taking the yearlings up the road 6 miles... :?



Oh, well. It's television... :wink:
