Major Debate!!

Nice calf NR. Probably not the next $20,000 show steer but a good doing kind that we all would like more of.

As far as keeping him for a clean up bull I would not have any problem if he is out of a good enough cow family. You don't seem like the type that worrys what the neighbors think anyway.

Robin,

I hate to ask a stupid question, but what exactly do you mean by not as fancy as you like your show steers. I guess I don't really understand the term fancy. Can anyone help?

gberry...

I'm not Red Robin, and sure don't have as good of an eye for cattle either, but I'll give this my best shot...

"Fancy" refers to stylish and clean fronted...kinda like a model. You know really feminine in terms of heifers, and a similar clean front in terms of steers. I always say it takes a big engine to run a big truck and sometimes to get deep, broody cattle with muscle, you don't get a "fancy" front.

And IL Rancher, is probably right!!! Yes, too practical to be a show steer.

This fanciest or not, I still think NR has a pretty dang nice calf (above average Major League too, ha, ha, ha)...

Hope this is "clear as mud.." :)

Cheers---

TTB
You're being too complimentary TTB. I think you're just trying to get me to put a bale of hay on the van when we come see you. I told you , there's no room.
BTW I think you explained it just fine. Better than I could.

Nope, not begging for hay, have lots of that...how 'bout some rain and grass though??? The rain, especially, doesn't take up much room!!!

One problem.................the calfs not black............

It is a nice calf. Just had to add the black comment as most of us have a preference and some areas do too.

Northern Rancher,

I've had several pens of home raised calves go 5#/day, on 5-1 conversion over 90 days (not setup with compensatory gain either), and I can't raise them any better than your little herkemer. People forget pounds is the first premium.

'I have a dream of a country where cattle are judged not on the colour of their hide but the strength of their carcass. where red baldies and black baldies can feed together without discrimination. I have a dream'. Under whatever colour hide cattle wear they're all just the most nutritious thing a human can consume no matter what side of the 49th they are on.

NR, you go dreamin crazy $hit like that, and pretty soon the guys with a net will be after you. I always figure color distinction is for cattlemen that can't see much else.

With philosophical fantasy mind visions such as this, you will come to be known as the Martin Luther Cattle King of Canada. :-) I'm all for you. Keep the dream alive.

I agree with NR, as well. However, I can't help but ask, how many of you truly know that your beef is nutritious? Or how nutritious it is? If anyone on this board has done nutrient density testing on their beef, I'd love to hear how it went.

I don't need any white coated lab rat to tell me the obvious-I got four little home grown carnivores running around here that are all the proof I need. You could substitute tasty or any other superlative for nutritious any way.

Well I took some pics of the 4H steers last fall and danged if I can find them-the kids are taking pics of them today and I was going to post them for everybody to compare too. I was sure I took them in August or September but I can't remember what I called the post-anyways here's Sara's steer as a baby.
