March came in like a lamb

The last day of February 2011 was quite mild but windy. The temperature got up to 50 degrees, and a lot of snow melted. The wind died down to nothing in the evening, and the low temperature for the night was just barely at the freezing mark. Early on the mornng of March 1st, the lamb came bouncing in, and the temperature was 44 degrees by 8:30 a.m. Shortly after that, either the lamb hit some unexpected electric fence, or saw the lion hot on its heels. Regardless, things went to heck in a hand basket. The north wind came up hard and brought with it steadily falling temperatures. By noon, it was only 20 degrees, and by nightfall the temperature was right at zero. Windchill readings were down to 12 or 15 below. Good thing the lamb wasn't sheared just yet.

No lamb here. It was -35 c yesterday morning and the warmest it got was -17. A nice little breeze made the temps just that much more invigorating.
This morning it is currently -27 c, snowing, and the wind is stronger. Forecast is to warm up for a day and then drop back to current temps.

Yesterday was fairly lambish, sunny but a chilly wind - today it is almost whiteout conditions at times. Just got back from rescuing my wife in town where she got marooned when our minivan lost its coolant and was mighty glad to get home again.

The van picked a good time to fail - nice and close to home! Last night I picked up our son and a group of his hockey buddies at Pearson Int'l Airport, Toronto . . . that would have been an interesting night had the thing decided to spring a leak 100 or so miles sooner!

The boy and his buddies returned from a hockey tournament in the Czech Republic. After a 10 day (and night!) tour, they were pretty much ready to hit their pillows, not thumb a ride on Hwy. 401!

No lamb here-- yesterday was -10 with snowing and blowing...Today we don't have the snowing but do have -4 temps and 25 to 35 mph winds really causing some drifting...

Weather folks say we are in for a day tomorrow of warmer temps (30?) and then right back into the deep freeze with another snowstorm predicted early next week which could bring some parts of the state another foot of snow.....

The first hint of even any warmup the weather boys are giving is for about mid month-- but they've teased me with that stuff before and been way wrong...

This morning winds were clocked at the north end of Vancouver Island at 161 kmph (100+ mph). It is getting windier here as the day progresses. Has warmed up to -12 C, tommorow it is supposed to drop again.

Debbie says if there are any lambs born in this area they are likely in "sicle" form.

52 and breezy today out here. Most of the snow has fled and the lamb is kickin' up his heels in the sunshine! :D If I even see that dang lion around here I'll shoot him!

I was just reading about that on one of the weather sites...Says you got "bombed"...

A VERY STRONG AND TIGHTLY WOUND UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM SPINNING OFF THE WASHINGTON STATE AND BRITISH COLUMBIA COAST. THIS STRONG UPPER LOW IS PUSHING A WIDE SWATH OF PACIFIC MOISTURE ACROSS THE INTER-MOUNTAIN WEST AND NORTHERN ROCKIES. EARLIER TODAY...THIS UPPER LOW MET THE CRITERIA TO BE LABELED A BOMB DUE TO ITS RAPID DECREASE IN PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS

The ridging ahead of that is what is causing our 25-35mph winds today...

We're supposed to get a warmup during the night (some parts of the state may get rain)- and then dropping temps again tommorrow night taking us back into the 10 to 20 below temps by Sunday- and another snowstorm :( ....

It was 40 below windchill early Wednesday morning
in SE Montana. Mr. FH had mineral to deliver and though the county
roads had been plowed, they were almost drifted shut in some
places. It was a miserable day and Tuesday was the same.
We came back to SD today and there is a huge area that all you
can see is SNOW. Deep snow. Our yard at the ranch has a sheet
of ice under the snow...

It was warrmer this morning, but the weather man called for
FREEZING RAIN in the afternoon. That's NOT what is needed...
the calves are pretty tough after they get dried off and some
milk in their belly, but not when they get WET. I feel so bad
for them in this weather. And they are calling for a lot of snow
next week.

People are calling from Western Montana trying
to find hay. That's a long way to truck hay...I asked if they
couldn't find hay closer to their home but they said it is all gone...

This winter is one for the record books.

I was going to set some hay moved yesterday and couldn't for all the mud. Its been beautiful the last two or three days. The temps were up in the high 40's during the day finally. At night it would drop down around the freezing mark. Woke up this morning to 6 inches of new snow and mid 20's. Mother Nature shouldn't tease like that. Now we have two more months of spring snows to look forard to and possibly more. It wouldn't be hard to talk me into moving back to Texas right now and I would even let a person talk me into dealing with some wild cattle. This is the first year since I moved here that I am tired of winter.
