Math Pop Quiz.

Three sailors go into a hotel to get a room and ask how much for the 3 of them for the night?
The innkeeper says $10 each, so the sailors give him 30 dollars and go to the room.

The innkeeper thinking he should have given them a discount calls the bellhop over and says: Here is $5, go up to the 3 sailor's room and give it back to them.

On the way up the bellhop could not figure out how to divide $5 between 3 sailors, so he put $2 in his pocket and gave each sailor one dollar back.

How much did each sailor pay for the room. A. $9
How many sailors were there? A.3
How much did the bellhop put in his pocket? A $2

So $9 x 3 = $27 and the bellhop put $2 in his pocket which makes $29
What happened to the other $1 to make the total of $30???????????

But the question was:
What happened to the other $1 to make the total of $30???????????

There is no extra dollar. The bellboy is a thief... let's string him up.

The statement the sailors paid 9 dollars is true but misleading.

The sailors originally paid 30 or 10 each... when the price was reduced to 25 the sailors paid $8.33 each plus 1/3 each for the $2 the bellboy stole or 8.33+0.67=9 each... plus 1 dollar returned to each sailor thus accounting for all 30.

Cowpuncher's explanation is the most efficient and spot on.

OK This is another one of those questions you may find on an employment test.
It will be written as a multiple choice question with your choices as follows:

Q. What happened to the other $1 to make the total of $30?

A. The innkeeper has it
B. The bellhop has it
C. The sailors have it

The correct answer is: C. The sailors have it

And yes, this is a trick question because of the way it is worded. The question itself is misleading.
