Neat pictures Silver, the alphacas the wifes pets??How far out of Ft St.John do you live?

The llama and alpaca aren't pets, they are here to work. Since we got them we don't have to build game fences to keep the elk, moose, and deer out of the hay. Turns out I'm not the only one that thinks these things are too ugly to be around.
We live about 50 miles out of FSJ, it's the closest town to us. I guess Hudson's hope would be about the same distance, but it's just a village.

Silver; That's a new one for me about llamas keeping wildlife out of feedyards (although I've heard of some real horse wrecks around llamas  )! Those fuzzy critters would sure be a lot cheaper than building game fence around stackyards!

Well, I was skeptical too. But so far it has worked to perfection.
As far as the horse wrecks go, I could tell you a story or to about that. :? However, I've had just as bad a wrecks by coming near my wifes miniture horses

OOPS guess I wasn't looking close enough to see an alpaca and a lama  A neighbor here raises alpacas. So your more north then FSJ!I don't really know B.C well, but Greg has a cousin around Mcbride, that raises simmentals.

Just about straight west of FSJ, actually. Best ranching country in the world, but don't tell anyone. It can be our little secret. :secret:

silver - have you ever heard of the Mcdonough ranch west of FSJ about 50 miles on the Halfway river?

Our land actually borders Jim's, and I worked for him a year or 2 out of high school. How do you know of it?

Well I am planning a trip to Alaska the first week in July and we are going to look at this ranch as it is for sale.

Well, it's a helluva piece of ground capable of running alot of cattle. You would know better than me how much is for sale, it's a lot smaller than it used to be. Maybe 20 sections private? Maybe another 30 sections grazing tenure to go with it?
At any rate, if you plan on living up here, you will likely never find a better community to live in.

Yeah, except for one cranky ol' poop, who will be your neighbor.

Winter here generally starts with first snow at halloween or shortly after, carrys on until first of april or so. We dont seem to get much snow anymore, about a foot at any one time on the ground seems like alot. Chinooks usually come and knock the snow down before it piles up too high. Average winter days would probably be about -10 to -15 daytime, 10 degrees cooler at night. This winter we havent had any extreme cold (-40 and colder) but we usually get a few days of it each year.
Average anual precip about 16", good for one damn good hay crop if the moisture is timely, some guys take two cuts if they get the first one early and don't plan on grazing it in the fall.
Very little severe wind, but usually breezy in the summer. Only predator of consequence here is the wolf, but seldom become a really big problem. We have a good predator controll program now, and so far they really look after us.

Oh, we can drag the crankiness out of you
Closest school from where you would likely live would be about an hour by bus. My kids get on at 7:05 am and arrive at about 8:25. There are kids that live a lot closer that ride for longer.

Silver - thanks for the info. I'll try and catch you another time I gotta go check heifers. We are having a pretty good blizard today. If there is anything else you would like to elaborate upon about the area please do. thanks

Hereford 76 can you narrow your location down anymore then north central MT. We are close to the NE corner of MT and are getting snow and wind as well. Temps just at Freezing but wind chill is raw. Good luck if you move north. Have fun getting used to those long early summer days. hard to know when to quit working and go to bed when you first move up.

Yes, I live at a tiny little place called Lothair off of HWY 2. Run cows up in the Sweet Grass Hills. go to www.ngrbulls.com to check it out.

You are a fair hike west of us but not much south. Nice web site and pretty counrty with those sweet grass hills. Bet we get some of the same wind. At times only minutes apart.
