Hey Soapweed, tell us a bit about the hitchhiker.

Where was he from and where was he going?

The hitch-hiker's name is Tim Shey. He is a Christian adventurer and is hitch-hiking to write a book about his experiences. Recently he has spent some time in Jackson Hole, and his next destination is Washington, D.C. He gave me a CD that details some of his rides. Seemed like a nice clean-cut chap, and he carries a sleeping bag in his backpack. Too many cold nights spent out in the elements convinced him that this was a good idea.

The life of a roaming rambling hitch-hiker probably would not be all bad, and the guy has enough charm to obtain free meals and someone new to dine with on most days.

After spending yesterday afternoon getting greasy and fiddling around with haying equipment, I am almost envying the man his "freedom". Poor old Saddletramp and I were both about wore out after trying to get the heavy cumbersome bale processor off of the mover, and getting the pick-up arm installed. Hydraulics are always so messy. Give me good old honest windmill oil any day.

My oldest son has a welding shop, and Saddletramp's oldest son works in the insurance business. We determined that neither one of us could tolerate doing the jobs our kids are doing. A welding shop is so grungy, and insurance, although clean enough, would be too "boring" and unfun because of being cramped up in an office. Some of us were just born to be cowboys.

I am the hitchhiker that Soapweed picked up. I am now in Idaho with some friends. I should have a book published called "High Plains Drifter"; it should be published in 2009. My website: http://www.wallsofjericho.50megs.com

Sincerely, Tim Shey

Dear Soapweed:

Just discovered this website yesterday. I am the hitchhiker you picked up back in 2006. The Lord still has me hitchhiking. Latest news: I should have a book published in 2009. The title is "High Plains Drifter"; I wrote it back in 2000. My website is http://www.wallsofjericho.50megs.com

Hope everything is going well with your family. Take care and God bless you.

Sincerely, High Plains Drifter

It has been a while since I last posted here on Ranchers.net. I am staying with some friends here in Valentine, Nebraska for several days. I just hitchhiked from Montana through North Dakota and South Dakota to Nebraska about a week ago.

My book High Plains Drifter: A Hitchhiking Journey Across America was published in December of 2008. It hasn't sold many copies, but I am happy that it was published. More information about my book is on my website.

Just a little about myself: I was raised on a cattle farm in north central Iowa. My dad was a veterinarian and my mom was a homemaker. I graduated with a BA in English Literature from Iowa State University. I have been hitchhiking for most of the past fourteen years. I am 49 years old.

I just discovered the photos (yesterday) that Soapweed took on page 1 of this thread and I noticed the picture that he took of me. I remember when he picked me up and gave me a ride; I believe Soapweed dropped me off at the gas station in Cody, Nebraska.

I showed the photos to my friends here in Valentine and they recognized Soapweed's son working at the windmill. Soapweed, I believe you know Shawn and Theresa Gothard; they used to live in Etna, Wyoming and they moved back to Valentine last fall.

A little miracle happened a week ago: I was hitchhiking east on U.S. 20 between Bassett and Stuart, Nebraska when Shawn gave me a ride. He told me that I could stay with he and his wife. We stopped at this farm west of Ainsworth to see his friends Greg and Marla. Greg and Marla had picked me up hitchhiking in Idaho back in 2004.

After I leave Valentine, I may be heading back west, God willing.
